Transfer stats and subscribers from wordpress.com blog to self-hosted

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

We have recently migrated our blog from wordpress.com to a self-hosted wordpress installation.

Everything is looking fine, but we need help to migrate stats and subscribers. Can we do this on our own? I have seen on this forum you normally offer help for this step.

I have instaled and activated jetpack plugin, but I can only see the stats from today on.

I have another question. What do we have to do with the old blog in wordpress.com? Do we have to make it private? (In the old blog we were using our own domain)

Thanks in adavanced for your help and support,
    Victor

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

To migrate subscribers follow this step by step guide https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/#wordpress-com-to-self-hosted-site

I tagged this thread with modlook so Staff will transfer your stats for you.

Make it private so you do not have a duplicate content issue with search engines. To change blog visibility to Private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3. See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings

    Hi,

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

I was able to make the olg blog private, but I couldn’t migrate the subscribers.

I followed the steps on this tutorial:

    http://jetpack.me/support/subscription-migration-tool/

But the select “Select WordPress.com Site” is empty.

I can send you a screenshot, if necessary

Could you help me on this step?

    Thanks,
    Victor

  • Hi there,

I have merged the stats from riafinancialblog.wordpress.com to riafinancialblog.com as requested.

And since you were having trouble with the subscriptions tool,

I went ahead and moved over all your subscribers from riafinancialblog.wordpress.com to riafinancialblog.com as well. It should be completed soon.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Thank you very much for your help! I can already see the stats and subscribers on the website. Great support.

I am having another problem. When I imported the content from the old blog, some photos didn’t upload (and the urls were not changed). This happened with photos with this kind of URL:

    https://riafinancialblog.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/…

I have read on some tutorials that it’s a common issue and that it can be fixed with the “Import external images” plugin, but in our case this plugin is not working (it doesn’t found any external image)

Here is an example of post with extenal images:

    http://riafinancialblog.com/2015/08/12/ria-expands-in-india-launch-three-new-remittance-services/

Do you know how I could fix this problem?

    Thanks in advance,
    Victor

    Hi,

I think a solution (if it wouldn’t be possible to upload external images) could be changing the Site visivility of the old blog.

Currently it’s set as private, and I can’t see the photos unless I am logged in wordpress.com.

In this case, would it be preferible to choose the second option “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”?

I would wait for your recommendation before doing anything.

    Thanks,
    Victor

  • Hey there,

You can definitely try that without allowing your site to have exposure to search engines. The site you are exporting must be accessible in order for the importer to pull the content.

Let me know if you still have trouble with the import. I can try it on my end.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

The site was accesible when we imported the content, but I don’t know why some images were not imported correctly and still maintain the old URL (.files.wordpress.com).

I think the best solution at the moment is to set the second option of Site Visibility (“Discourage search engines from indexing this site”). Could this affect the SEO of the blog? I am afraid Google could consider there is duplicate content.

Maybe a better solution would be manually re-upload the external images, as most of the photos were imported correctly, and it wouldn’t take to long to fix the external images.

Last question. We have an account on videopress, and we have jetpack module activated. We can see the old videos on the post, but when I go to Media > VideoPress, and I click on “Browse your videopress gallery” I can’t see any video (it keeps loading with no result). Do we have to make any change on the videopress account?

    Thanks,
    Victor

  • @Victor,

Maybe a better solution would be manually re-upload the external images, as most of the photos were imported correctly, and it wouldn’t take to long to fix the external images.

If it was only a few images, manually re-uploading those missing images would most likely be the best bet.

I can’t see any video (it keeps loading with no result). Do we have to make any change on the videopress account?

I can’t see what is going on with your self hosted site, but this is what I think is going on via https://jetpack.me/support/videopress-2/:

Note: The “upload files” link in the above screenshot will upload a video directly to your self-hosted site’s media library, not your VideoPress library.

Have you checked to see if the videos are in your self-hosted site’s media library?

    Let me know. Thanks!
