Transfer stats from WordPress.com to WordPress.org/media import issue

  • Unknown's avatar

My research shows that the only way to transfer JetPack stats is for staff to manually do that. I would love to have all of my stats transfered to my new host. I am using the same domain name. Also, since my domain is now being hosted elsewhere, do I cancel my domain plan with WordPress?

Also, I have tried importing my old site into WordPress.org but, while I have managed to get all of my posts up, only random media files have transfered. I don’t know if this is because there are two WordPress.com XML files? If there is a way to have everything from my old media library transfered, that would be great.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I see that you have done a proper research. I am adding the “modlook” tag to this thread. One of the WordPress.com Happiness Engineers should take a look at this post and help you transfer stats from your WordPress.com site to Jetpack-powered self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site.

Make sure you login into the same Jetpack account on your new self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site.

Also, share your WordPress.com site address and self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site address so that the WordPress.com Happiness Engineers will be able to act on it as soon as they see this thread.

I don’t know if this is because there are two WordPress.com XML files?

That does not look right. Ideally there should be only one .xml file and not two. Are you sure you followed the steps mentioned on this page? It also helps to have a look at the steps in this page to make sure you are importing it right.

  • Hi there,

Can you please give the addresses of the site FROM and TO which you want the stats moved?

We have no control over the WordPress importer on your self-hosted site. The export file you got from your site contains links to all the files in your media library, but the importer on your self-hosted site has to do the work to move those images across to the new site. That process can fail for various reasons, none of which we control, like hitting memory limits at your hosting provider.

The best place to ask for help in fixing that are the WordPress.org forums where users should have more experience with this issue:

I followed those instructions and the export still gave me two XML files. One has everything from my site’s creation in December 2015 up until late August 2017 and is 4.3MB in size, whereas the second file has everything from the remainder of August 2017 until November 2017. I have tried importing both XML files, but importing one XML file to my new, self-hosted replaces the other upload. All of my articles are now on my new site, it’s just the media files from the larger XML file which are not migrating correctly. I’ll take this issue over to WordPress.org too.

Can you please give the addresses of the site FROM and TO which you want the stats moved?

    FROM: shebopsblog.wordpress.com
    TO: shebops.net

Let me know if you need any other details from me. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the links. I’ve transferred your stats.

I’ve also found out why your images won’t transfer. You have your domain set up so your WordPress.com site will automatically redirect to your new site, which is fine, but that prevents the importer on your new site from accessing the media library on your WordPress.com site.

I’ve temporarily set the primary domain for your WordPress.com site to the free address. Please create a new export from that site and import it to your self-hosted site. The content that already imported might prevent the images from being pulled in after the fact, but try just importing the new files first. If the images still won’t import, try emptying the new site and running the import from scratch. Then it should pull across the images as it imports the posts anew.

Once the import is done, go to My Site ->Domains for the WordPress.com site, and switch the primary domain back to the custom domain so traffic will again be redirected to the new site.

I’ve reached this stage, but the WordPress Importer is now importing even less than it did the first time that I attempted this, before clearing the site. After clearing the site, I’ve run the Importer using each newly exported file a few times, and it’s not importing much at all – just over 40 posts from both XML files all together, when there should be over 240.

  • Did you delete the posts from Trash as well? If the importer detects a post already on the site, even in the Trash folder, it will skip that post during import.

I removed everything. Even tags, categories and pages.

I have now managed to import all of my media files. I achieved this by exporting and importing each month’s media files individually. It was a little time consuming, but it was just as time consuming trying to find a ‘quick fix’ solution.

Thanks for your help with this situation.

  • Thanks for letting me know. I see you’ve already switched your primary domain back as well, so traffic to your old WordPress.com site should automatically redirect to the new site as long as your domain stays registered with us.
