Transfer to self hosting site
-
I have asked about this before but I just want to confirm I’ve got it right. I want to turn the domain name I have into a self hosted site that I can use FTP with but I’m finding it a bit confusing. Can someone just confirm this is correct: 1 I go to another hosting company and transfer the domain name, 2. I ask them for the name servers, 3 I log in to the WordPress account and re-point the servers
Is that right?
Any help appreciated
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Mostly – you don’t need to transfer the domain name – just re-point to the name-servers of your new host –

Thanks, that is what I was told before but I’m sorry I am not quite sure how to get a “new host”… that’s why I thought I had to transfer it. Sorry, can you explain more..?

Not so much. There much more to it than just changing the nameservers.
If you want to continue to use WordPress as your software, you need find a paid web hosting service that supports it and then install it or have your host install it for you.
Then, if you want to have your current WordPress.com content appear on the new site, you’ll need to export your WordPress.com site and then import it to the new site.
Once you’ve got it all set up, you’ll be responsible for all the maintenance, upgrades, etc.
Fortunately, if you find this all a bit too much, you can pay WordPress.com to transition your existing site to a self-hosted site.
Here’s a little background reading:

Paying for a guided transfer is not necessary provided you are capable of following step by step directions. This is the step by step process thesacredpath and I use Setting up a self-hosted WordPress.org install > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/11/06/setting-up-a-self-hosted-wordpress-org-install/

~~TT I was just going to suggest your site somewhere – here is also another link here that might help:

Regardless of which way the OP chooses to go, it’s still a lot more involved than just changing nameservers. :) #justsaying

ok thanks… basically I am not even bothered about using wordpress.org, I have been running another site for years using Dreamweaver and I think I should just go back to that for this one.
So if I just want the domain and not bothered about using wordpress.org, is it different? If getting a new host doesn’t mean transferring, what does that mean?
Sorry if I sound clueless but I am still sure I can do it without paying for the guided transfer, just trying to navigate the jargon

In all of this I am assuming that you’ve purchased the domain name through WordPress.com. If that is so, once you have your other webhosting set up, you’ll have to change the nameservers in your domain management panel, as ranh pointed out in your other support thread.
Good luck!

@justjennifer yes I have purchased it through wordpress.com.
The question I need answering is to do with “once you have your other webhosting set up”- is this as simple as going to a web hosting company and registering with them?
For info, I am not bothered about the content that is there at the moment, and I am also thinking that I would rather just go back to a Dreamweaver site, so not necessarily using WordPress.org
