transfer to wordpress.org

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been told that I should transfer to wordpress.org – that this will give me more options and allow me to post adverts etc.
HOw easy is the process? Does it cost anything?
How should I prepare for it to ensure I don’t have to re-do anything on my site as it stands?
Also, if I transfer does it mean
    – that I will lose this support network & free email support from wordpress? (bad)
    – that the ‘free’ adverts currently posted to my site by wordpress will stop? (good!)

What are the other implications? Please can you answer specifically rather than directing me to a page. Thanks.

    Please read these entries:

Yes it will but if you expect to make much income at all then think again. It takes money to make money – that’s how business operates. Most bloggers who move their content to WordPress.org installs so they can make money find they make very little over and above their web hosting and associated self-hosting costs.

If you are an experienced WordPress.com software user, and have the skill sets required to set up and manage your own self hosted WordPress.org install then the instructions for making the move are easy to follow. But if you are not skilled at WordPress.com blogging, and also lack the skill sets required to self host your own WordPress.org install then acquiring those skills first is recommended.

The process can either be done by yourself free of charge or you can purchase a guided transfer for $119. and have Staff do it for you. Web hosting at WordPress.com is free of charge but when it comes to a WordPress.org install only the software is free. You have to hire a web host for the install. For self-hosting figure an average monthly total cost (including cost of a domain name) of about $10 to $25 generally, but that all depends on storage and bandwidth requirements.

As your blog will not longer be a part of the free hosted WordPress.com community and as WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and different the answer to both questions is “yes”. If you do set up a self hosted WordPress.com install you will be personally responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting.

I’m sorry but I don’t have either the time or inclination to write a special manual for you. Read this please and appreciate why I’m not inclined to type the whole thing out again. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/11/06/setting-up-a-self-hosted-wordpress-org-install/

Thank you very much for your detailed and straight reply.

When you say – ‘You have to hire a web host for the install’ – I already pay WebFusion for my domain name http://www.queenofretreats.com & so as I understand it they would be able to host the site – right?

When you say – ‘you will be personally responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting’ – there is still a support service available for wordpress.org, paid for or otherwise, right?

On a side note – Wouldn’t whether someone makes money from a site or not depend on their business model? :-)

I have never used Web Fusion and have no idea what services they provide. You would have to contact them to find out if they do host WordPress.org installs or not.

Yes, there are support forums at http://wordpress.org/support/ also manned by Volunteers. However, speaking from experience I can tell you that the turn around time for getting answers is not as short as it is here. I can also tell you that the users are expected to read the manual ie. Codex and there is no hand holding support like we provide on this support forum. There is no Staff support there as there is no Staff. If you do set up a self hosted WordPress.com install you will be personally responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting.

Note: Premium Themes are customized for WordPress.com usage only, and cannot be transferred to self-hosted WordPress.org sites. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/premium-themes/

    Best wishes with your install.
