Transfer upgrade to sandbox blog?

  I have two blogs (one private and one public) and one domain upgrade that is currently mapped to the public blog. I would like to use the private blog as a sandbox to transfer the content from the public blog, change the theme, optimize for the new theme, and test everything. Then I want to make the private blog public, switch my domain to the sandbox blog, and turn the old public blog to private.

  It looks like all I need to do WordPress account-wise is transfer my domain upgrade from the public blog to the private.

  Is that correct and does this sound like a workable plan?

  What will happen to the links that point to the old blog? Will they be converted during import or will they all need to be fixed by hand?
