Transfer URL within WP from one blog to another

  • Unknown's avatar

I’d like to transfer the URL from a test blog I had to the one I want to use so I can keep that username, e-mail address, content, etc. I want to pay for a domain and upgraded account but don’t want to do it until I can be assured it will be applied to the domain I want to use (but there is no human to ask before I purchase and I’m trying to avoid creating a bigger problem). I hope someone can help and soon! Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there.

If I understood your need, you want to upgrade you account cause you need to add a custom domain but you would like to upgrade only if the domain you want is available to register, right?

If so, you can follow the steps of the following link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/

On the step 4 you will know if the domain you want is available even before upgrade your account.

Well, no, that is not completely accurate. I already know the domain name I want is available. This is the problem:
    1. I created a test blog on WordPress called wrightingmylife.
    2. I have another blog on WordPress called soulsatisfaction. I want to keep the e-mail address, user name, content and followers that are associated with that account but I want to change its username to wrightingmylife. Essentially, I just want to transfer the wrightingmylife URL to soulsatisfaction.
    3. I will pay for a personal site but not until I know that I can accomplish the above.
    4. Likewise, I intend to purchase the wrightingmylife URL but I don’t want to do that until I can accomplish the above.
    5. Once the above is complete, my intent is to deactivite the original wrightingmylife blog.

Can you tell me how to transfer the URL for wrightingmylife to soulsatisfaction, please?

  • This time I got it. Sorry for have misunderstanding you before.

I guess that the only way of transferring your URL wrightingmylife.wordpress.com to soulsatisfaction.wordpress.com is exporting and importing the content from one blog to another as explained in the end of the page at the following link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

Search for the title “Changing Your Blog Address To One You Already Own” and follow the 3 steps (the third one is optional).

But if you are intended to buy the wrightingmylife.com domain you don’t really need to do all of this. You can just buy this domain using your current blog (soulsatisfaction). After that people will access your website through wrightingmylife.com anyway and soulsatisfaction.wordpress.com would be hided (if this is what you ultimately want).

Hope this time I could help you.

Thank you! This seems to be exactly what I was hoping to do. And now that you said I could accomplish it by purchasing the domain via the soulsatisfaction site and that name then becoming hidden sounds perfect. I did not have any content on wrightingmylife so there is essentially nothing to import except the name. Still, no reason to go to all that trouble if I can accomplish it by purchasing the name. I will give it a try. And then see if I can deactivate the wrightingmylife site.

  • Great! This is it.

So you can follow the instructions of the link I first gave you to register the domain wrightingmylife.com, using your current website (soulsatisfaction). Here is the link again:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/

The site, you can delete or just leave it there. It’s up to you.

    Good luck with that!

  • *I mean, the old site that you used as a test, you can delete or just leave it there. It’s up to you.

I paid for the domain name and a personal account. It appears to be using that URL (on soul satisfaction). If I “delete” the wrightingmylife blog name will that get mixed up with the one I paid for? Likewise, if I discontinue my paid domain registration in a year how would that affect the URL?

  • I don’t know if I understood your doubts but let’s try to solve it.

    1. your site wrightingmylife.wordpress.com is a WordPress default domain (it has the wordpress.com on the adress) and totally independent of the website you are currently using (soul satisfaction) which is now wrightingmylife.com (a .com domain that you’ve just registered.)

    2. if you delete the wrightingmylife.wordpress.com you will loose all the website content (which I think it’s ok since you said it is a test site), and you will also loose the wrightingmylife.wordpress.com address. Meaning that you won’t be able to use it again in the future.

    3. if you discontinue the paid plan, you will loose the wrightingmylife.com domain and the address will be back to the original one (the soulstisfaction one).

Maybe, the best thing to do is to leave the wrightingmylife.wordpress.com as it is. If you get back to the free plan in the future you can use this address at least. In these case, you would have to do the export (from the soul satisfaction) and import (to wrightingmylife.wordpress.com) process I mentioned before. This way you would have the same website, under the address wrightingmylife.wordpress.com.

Let me know if you still have any doubt.

We are getting closer to understanding the problem:
    1. Yes, wrightingmylife.wordpress.com is a WordPress default domain and totally independent of soulsatisfactionsite.wordpress.com (which has all the content, username, e-mail address, etc. that I wish to retian and use). Each blog is registered to me under different usernames and e-mail addresses.

    2. I am glad you confirmed that:
    – I would not be able to use the wrightingmylife.wordpress.com address in the future if I delete it now (and you are correct that it doesn’t matter if I lose content, etc. because it was a test site and holds no real info).

    3. And
    – that if I discontinue the paid plan I will not be able to use the wrightingmylife.wordpress.com address again and that it would return to soulsatisfaction.wordpress.com. (I did not realize that, particularly the revert to soulsatisfaction.wordpress.com.)

However, and this is the part I need clarification on:
    – if I leave the wrightingmylife.wordpress.com as it is, and use the paid domain wrightingmylife.com will that confuse people who might want to find me? Would a solution be to put a note on the front page of that blog with my correct (paid) domain address?

You have been very helpful. Thank you.

I don’t delete my test blogs as they may come in handy in the future. Just set wrightingmylife.wordpress.com to private (via “Settings” “General”) then it won’t confuse people with your .com site but it will still be there if you need it ever again.
