Transfer wordpress.com to wordpress.org

hello, so I am like brand new to all of this, but I got confused with the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. I just recently purchased the business plan for a year with wordpress.com. I wanted to use the self hosting. I was told that wordpress.org is self hosting, if this is the case, is it possible to switch my current plan I purchased and website to wordpress.org?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, WordPress.org is not a web hosting provider. It’s the place where the WordPress software is developed and maintained and where you can download it to install on a 3rd party hosting provider, like Hostinger, Bluehost, GoDaddy and the like. (NAYY) Here’s more info on that https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

WordPress.com, where we are, is a web hosting provider that uses the WordPress software. With the WordPress.com Business plan you also have access to installing plugins and your own custom themes, as well as many other built-in features. You can check those out here. https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/business-plan/

Also, regardless of where you host your site, you will need to adhere to their Terms of Service. Here’s info on that for WordPress.com Terms of Service and User Guidelines

Hope that helps clarify things but post back here if you have other questions.

Keep in mind also that annual plans here on WordPress.com have a 14-day refund window, so if you are within that period and looking to cancel and refund, you want to read this guide https://wordpress.com/support/refunds/

  • Hi there,

As 2020testjj mentioned, WordPress.org doesn’t provide hosting. Self-hosting your site means purchasing a plan with a third-party hosting provider, downloading the software from WordPress.org, installing it on the server, and managing it yourself. WordPress.org only provides the software, but it doesn’t offer hosting services.

On the other hand, WordPress.com provides both the software (the same core software from WordPress.org plus additional features) and the hosting, with additional services.

With the WordPress.com Business plan, you can install the same plugins and themes as in a self-hosted site (except for a short list of incompatible plugins).

if this is the case, is it possible to switch my current plan I purchased and website to wordpress.org?

This is not possible, as your plan is specific to WordPress.com (and also, as mentioned before, WordPress.org does not provide hosting).

Your WordPress.com plan includes support, so I recommend you contact us via messaging or email (at help@wordpress.com) if you need help. We’ll be happy to help you achieve your goals!

Finally, a clarification regarding the Terms of Service and User Guidelines. Since these are specific to WordPress.com, they only apply to sites hosted with us. Sites hosted elsewhere are governed by each hosting provider’s terms of service.
