I created a blog hosted on wordpress but it has too many limitations. So, if I were to install wordpress on my own server, could I keep the same user name?

The username shouldn’t be a problem, as atthe404 said. If you host WordPress privately, then you’re the only user (unless you add others), so you should be able to choose whatever name you want. You can include any old posts in your new .org blog by using Dashboard > Manage > Export, and then importing the file in to your new blog. So if you use the same username in your new blog, everything should appear the same.

The main thing you’ll need is a unique domain name. That might not necessarily match your username, though, so you’ll probably want to leave a post or a notice on your old blog directing people to the new address. You might want to keep your old blog as well, for back-up purposes; it can be quite useful, in case anything goes wrong. :)

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Thanks guys! My current blog is relatively new so redirecting/forwarding won’t be an issue. I was afraid that I’ll have to abandon this user name, but I’m glad I don’t :)

Yeah, I know the feeling; found a good username and you don’t want to let it go! No need to here, though. Happy blogging. :)

I would imagine that the domain name inko9nito dot com is free.

After you export your posts from here, you could edit the XML file, changing the username on all posts using something like Wordpad’s replace feature anyway – if you had to. I’m doing that now… as WordPress.com’s server timesout when I ask it to change the username for me…

The user name can be reset in options on the new blog. Hacking not needed (not for that anyway:))
