Transfered domain off of WordPress, but NameServers still point to WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

After domain transfer to new host, the domain is still displaying WordPress nameservers in whois information, and cannot do anything with domain until this is resolved. The domain is now expired, so I cannot access the edit, only edit DNS…My goal is to move the domain (mainememorialorg) off of wordpress and to a new host, which ultimately will point to a different domain.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Here are the steps to follow for transferring your domain to a new registrar: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/transfer-domain-registration/

The message you saw about your domain being expired is for the mapping here at WordPress.com. Since you’re transferring your domain elsewhere, you don’t need to renew that part.

If you visit this link, you should still be able to access your blog: http://mainememorial.wordpress.com/wp-admin

If your domain has actually expired I don’t think you can transfer it

It was transferred prior to it expiring. Followed the steps in the link that is provided, it transferred successfully. But it still displays the WordPress Name Servers on the Whois Information, despite the transfer going through successfully 2 weeks ago. Also when I log in to the new hosting service, it notices that the Name Servers have not changed over:

Making changes to this zone file will not affect your live DNS because you are not using (mt) Media Temple nameservers. In order for this zone file to affect your DNS, you will need to set the nameservers for your domain to:

    Thanks for the response.

whois still shows the domain at WordPress.COM: http://www.whois.com/whois/mainememorial.org

I have flagged this for staff attention

    Hi there,

Because your domain mainememorial.org was transferred to a new domain registrar, WordPress.com no longer controls what name servers your domain is using. You will need to contact your new domain registrar and ask them to update your domain’s name servers for you. (WordPress.com can only change your domain’s name servers as long as it is registered here at WordPress.com.)

Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

@rachelmcr – then why is the whois link above still showing Wild West Domains? Would seem to me that a week or two the OP indicates the transfer happened should have been updated by now?

    thanks

@auxclass — Good question! Wild West Domains isn’t exclusively WordPress.com’s registrar, so it’s possible to have a domain registered with them and not have it registered here at WordPress.com. According to our records, the domain isn’t registered through WordPress.com anymore.

    OK – thanks

Was not aware that Wild West Domains could also have non WordPress.COM related registrations – the OP did not indicate where they transferred to so I figured the transfer went wrong some how – but if they did transfer to another registrar – that would account for them not being able to manage the domain with their account here

Thank you all for the responses. The transfer was off of WordPress to MediaTemple. I thought it was something still residing on WordPress’ side, but as rachelmcr stated it looks like it is on MediaTemple’s. I will open a ticket with them. Thank you so much for the advice and help!
