transfering a domain and importing a website from another provider
-
I have a current website and custom domain hosted by another provider. My goal is to transfer my domain and design a new website hosted by WordPress.com using one of the outstanding free WordPress themes that I’ve already chosen. The Premium plan will be the best one for my website, but I haven’t yet made the purchase, as I need technical help first. After reading the articles on transferring a domain from another provider to WordPress and importing an existing website to WordPress, the correct order of steps is confusing at best and seems to conflict with the articles I read on my current provider’s website on how to transfer my domain away from them. I have very little time to ask about this in the WordPress forums and wait for an answer. Please help! Your assistance will be greatly appreciated! Thank you
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Hey there, we’d be glad to help you! And there are a lot of ways to go about importing a site from one service to another.
If I were in your shoes, this is the process I would use for a smooth transition:
1. Get your plan so you can get direct help. You can skip the domain steps for now.
2. Import your site, if you can: https://wordpress.com/support/import/
3. Go through your site to fine-tune anything from the import. Sometimes you’ll need to adjust the layout, etc. But you’ll have support there to help with any questions you have.
4. When you’re ready to go live, log into your current domain registrar. Change the name servers to these:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/change-name-servers/5. Connect the domain: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
6. Then transfer the domain. That takes a few days, but the site will already be pointed here, so you won’t have any downtime or other issues: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/
We’re happy to help with any questions you have!
