Howdy –
Sure thing. Let’s chat a bit about your site, and the functionality that you need for it. That will help us get you started on the best hosting plan for the project and budget.
In order to connect a domain an upgraded hosting plan is needed. Those plans, cost, and features are listed on https://wordpress.com/pricing/ We can answer any questions you have about that information.
.ca domains can be connected as part of those hosting plans through a domain connection. It’s a little different than a domain transfer, but the end result is the same. Take a look at this material for more details on how that works and write back to me here with any other questions.

Last thing, i believe these are the instructions you’ll follow from the Square Space side of this process: https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/4404183898125-Nameservers-and-DNSSEC-for-Squarespace-domains

Hi there,
Are the WordPress plans the same as hosting?
I think it will help if I clarify that we are the “host” for all sites on WordPress.com, even free ones. So we host michaelabellphoto.wordpress.com for you currently.
Standard hosting providers don’t offer free sites (that I know of) so typically they charge an “up-front” hosting fees and then gives you access to create your websites. On WordPress.com we don’t charge an up-front fee like that so instead we offer free sites that are simplified and a great place to start, then you can add upgrades (plans) give your site more and more capabilities and improved infrastructure for improved performance.
The cost of that plan is similar to the hosting costs for other “web hosts” and would offer you a site with the same capabilities and options for customization, but we’ve been hosting your site all along.
Do I have to register my .ca domain with CIRA? As I’m a Canadian
Reading your thread it sounds like you already have a .ca domain, and Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) is the registry for the country-code domain (ccTLD) .ca extension that represents Canada. Essentially you have already registered with CIRA, wether your domain is with it’s current provider or with us.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hey! Perfect! So how do I transfer my domain over then? As it says it can only be connected and not transfered

Hi there!
You’ll want to follow the instructions below to connect your domain.
If you already own a domain name with another provider, you can use that domain with your WordPress.com site. Once you complete the steps below, instead of your site address being something like yourgroovysite.wordpress.com, your site’s address will be something like yourgroovydomain.com. Follow the steps in this guide to keep your domain registered with your current provider and use it to showDomain connection is included with a WordPress.com Plan. So the proper order of doing this would be:
- Upgrade to a WordPress.com plan
- Follow the steps here to add a domain connection
- Update the nameservers on your current registrar’s end (The nameservers are listed in the support article above).
- Wait up to 72 hours for the nameserver changes to propagate.
- Finally, set the domain as the primary address on your site.
We’d love to suggest a plan for you if you’re still deciding. Would you like to tell us a bit about the site you’re building? What’s the site for, and what features do you need on your site? This will help us learn more about your site goals and share personalized suggestions with you.
