transfering an outside domain to wordpress
-
Hi,
I have an outside domain, http://www.paramountfit.com, for my company that I have hosted with another host and domain registrar and I would like to transfer that domain to wordpress. I like how easily I can setup and manage my site through wordpress and I’d like to be able to do that with my company site. I want to keep the domain name though, so just curious how I can use my existing domain name through wordpress. Thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
You are welcome to set up your site on WordPress.com and point the name servers for your domain to us. You will also need to purchase domain mapping with us so that the domain will work here. However, we don’t accept incoming domain transfers at this time, so you will need to either keep your existing domain registrar. This will not affect your ability to use the domain here.

Hi,
So in summary, I leave the domain where it is and the by using your domain mapping I can point my existing site at you? And what is the cost for the domain mapping? And finally, once this is done am I then able to redo the look and setup of my site with the wordpress templates etc? Or how is that done? Thanks. -
Hi again,
Yes, that’s correct. Domain mapping is $13/year.
At any point in the process you can choose one of over 250 themes (http://theme.wordpress.com/ ) and do basic customizations for free.
For advanced customization options, you can purchase Custom Design for $30/year:

Hi,
So how will the information that is currently on my site transfer over? Will it look as it currently does and then I can totally redo things using the normal wordpress format and dashboard?
And how do I go about initiating this move? What do I need to do from my end? Thanks. -
When you do an import, your posts, pages, comments and media attachments (images) should transfer over assuming your previous site was also done in WordPress. You will need to choose and set up your theme, widgets, and any other customization once you’ve moved your content over.
This page may answer some of your questions:

I’ll take a look at this link. My current website is NOT done in wordpress, so that is why i’m curious and concerned what will happen. Thanks.
-
Ah, okay. How was your site built, and is it using any content management system now? Depending on how it was created, you may not be able to do a simple import.
-
I’m not exactly sure the answer to this, and I have forwarded this on to my IT guy that build it. All I know is I used to login to ControlPanel to make changes, but I don’t even remember how to do that anymore.
I don’t really care if the content transfers over as I’m going to redo it anyway, I just don’t want to lose my current domain. And I also have email accounts associated with that site.
-
You will not lose your domain. If you use name servers to point your domain to us, you will need to add MX records for your email hosting provider so the email still works:

ok. I’ll see what my IT guy says and if this all makes sense to him and then I’ll get the process started. I’ll be in touch if I have questions (which is likely). Thanks for your help thus far.
