Transfering Domain while keeping old site live
-
Hi there! I am looking to build a new website for my organization using wordpress.com. We already have a website that needs to be kept up and running until the new website is complete. This will probably take a few weeks. When setting up my new WordPress website, should I go ahead and transfer the current domain? Or should I set it up under a new domain, and then pay to have the old domain mapped or transferred to the new site?

Hi sbacsav,
Or should I set it up under a new domain, and then pay to have the old domain mapped or transferred to the new site?
You can start by creating a free site on WordPress.com (with an address containing “.wordpress.com”), importing content, choosing a theme and making customisations.
When you are ready to make the switch, the current domain can be mapped or transferred to WordPress.com.
If you need to upgrade plans in order to access certain features (premium themes, additional storage space etc) before then, the domain credit it includes can be left unused until a later date.
If you have questions about any part of the process, just let me know and I’ll be happy to send more information.
