Transfering existing Domain and 250 post blog from WIX to WordPress

I need to transfer my domain and posts, there are no comments, the posts are an archive or library that I feed several times a week from my private community on Mighty Networks, it’s the public face of our private group so comments are disabled … what is the best approach to do the cleanly without losing google momentum… the blog and domain have been building steam for 3 years and are well placed on Google. I don’t want to lose that

  • Hi –

What I suggest is to set up your new blog on WordPress.com. Keep it private to hide it from the internet until you’ve imported the old content and it is ready to go.

You will take a small hit in SEO, that’s normal. It will recover quickly as WordPress.com has great SEO tools built in to our product.

Do you have a custom domain that needs moved over as well?

Hi Liz , I may be responding twice, not quite sure how this works…
Yes, I do have a custom domain. Can you suggest a video tutorial or something that shows me how to move the domain and the posts cleanly? I have links for my posts all over the place. On Feedspot, on Facebook, Pinterset Twitter and in my Mighty Networks community, it’s a resource blog and it’s hit a couple of hundred times a day right now. So i want the current shares to go to the new word press blog not a 404. I haven’t found the specific thing that explains how to do this correctly … is it 304 redirect?

  • Hi wvdea, we don’t have a video, but we do have a guide.

Start by creating a site. I recommend choosing a plan from the get-go so you’ll have the space and features you’ll need. It’ll also give you direct access to our support team so we can help you through whatever questions you have.

But don’t choose a custom domain yet. That will come in later.

Then you can make the site private at https://wordpress.com/settings

Then, work on these steps to pull in your content:
    https://transferto.wordpress.com/wix/

I’d recommend waiting til after your content is here to choose the best theme to go with it. Then, when you’ve customized the site as you’d like, you can map the domain to our servers, or even transfer its registration here.

    I hope this helps!
