Transfering from old host site and .org

    Hi! I work for a non-profit company and we’re trying to switch from weebly to wordpress (I’m currently on my own personal account). We have a lot of questions. We already own the domain name with our weebly website, so we’re wondering how it would work out as our subscription with weebly isn’t up for another few months. Another major issue is since we are a non-profit, it is a huge priority for us to have a url that is a .org and not a .com, how does this work with wordpress? We don’t want to purchase the upgraded business package until we know for sure that this will all work out. Thank you!

    Hello jessicaschaper,

    I don’t personally know if Weebly allows domain remapping. You may have to contact their support to find out more about it. You should be able to transfer your domain (assuming that it isn’t a <sitename>.weebly.com) out to a company like Namecheap or GoDaddy, and map it at WordPress.com. WordPress.com doesn’t currently allow you to transfer your domain in, but you may map your domain from elsewhere. More about domain mapping.

    May I ask you for the URL of the site?

    If you transfer your domain out, you should be able to keep that, and that would be ideal for anybody that already knows your web address.

    The harder part for you will be moving your content over. My understanding is that Weebly doesn’t give you any way to export your site’s content into a file that you can move over to WordPress.com.

    This is a good idea. I’d recommend playing around with a free WordPress.com site, and see if this is right for you. If you need help getting started, I’d recommend checking out learn.wordpress.com.

    There is an outside article here that can help to get moved. It looks pretty complete, but I cannot vouch for the website, or the article’s accuracy.
