transfering my two domains to WordPress–good idea?
-
I have two domains currently hosted by GoDaddy–they are the same name, but one is .com, the other is .net. Since I will be switching to WordPress for web design, it seems like a good idea to switch hosting to WordPress Pro as well. But will I have to pay separately for the two domains?
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The paid plan includes 1 free domain for the first year. After the first year, it will renew at the rates listed at https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/ and the second domain will transfer at the rates listed there too.
As for should you transferring them, it’s more a personal preference type of thing, really.
Domain Connection allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
A transfer would allow you to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/
So, basically, are you an “all of your eggs in one basket” type of person, or “not all of your eggs in one basket”? :)

My xxx.net domain was just to prevent someone else from using a domain too close to mine. It will just be a redirect to my .com site, so was hoping it would not cost as much…
I’m leaning toward all eggs in one basket–will likely do the domain transfer and just give up what I paid GoDaddy (they did refund me for the WordPress hosting though). The only downside I can see is that I can get an actual person for tech support help on GoDaddy. I can’t see any place for WordPress to get help except “the community”–and I was worried about getting answers that are just guesses or not helpful.
But I see that you are Staff so that basically addresses my concern!
Also I started listening to an intro course today but bailed when the speaker said that it won’t look or behave the same for people who have WordPress through a domain host like GoDaddy. So I’ll start over with taht course once I get *something* up on my site! Thanks!

Hi there,
I can’t see any place for WordPress to get help except “the community,”–and I was worried about getting answers that are just guesses or not helpful.
I’d like to further clarify that the Pro Plan includes priority support including live chat M-F (email support 7 days a week), so you would have additional access on top of these forums you are posting on now. :)
My xxx.net domain was just to prevent someone else from using a domain too close to mine. It will just be a redirect to my .com site, so I was hoping it would not cost as much…
Upgrading to the Pro Plan will mean that you can transfer one of your domains for free, and once it lands on your account here, we add an extra year to the expiry (you get a free year of domain service with your plan), which can help offset the cost of the plan itself.
After the year of free registration has passed, you would need to renew the domain fees yearly going forward.
The second domain you transfer would not be free, and for com/.net domains it’s $18 to transfer the domain, and then you would also need to renew yearly.
If cost is an issue you can always leave your domains at GoDaddy, and use the domain connection option in the Pro Plan to connect your .com domain to the site hosted here, and then ask for GoDaddy to assist you in redirecting the .net domain to it.
Also, I started listening to an intro course today but bailed when the speaker said that it won’t look or behave the same for people who have WordPress through a domain host like GoDaddy. So I’ll start over with that course once I get *something* up on my site!
There are some platform differences between self-hosted websites — sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc. — and sites hosted on WordPress.com. However, there is no real difference if you upgrade to the Pro Plan (which you would need to do to have a custom domain). You would have the same ability to upload themes and plugins, access source code and database files directly, etc.
We would be different from your current host because we are a “managed WordPress host” we would take care of your core software updates, login protection, malware scanning, daily incremental backups, and in-house support as mentioned above. Most hosts do not offer those (you need to manage them yourself) unless they also offer a “managed” option, which is usually an additional cost from their standard hosting.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
