Is there any way for me to transfer all the content from my wordpress.com blog site to a new wordpress.org site?? I do not want to have a wordpress.com blog anymore. I want a more custom designed wordpress.org site but I want to transfer all the info from from my wordpress.com blog site….can this be done? and how?

A search for “moving a blog” in the support pages brought this:

Please accept this advice. When your move is completed change the visibility of the WordPress.com blog to “private” so there is no duplicate content issue and keep it as a back-up blog. You can use the export function on your WordPress.org install to periodically export/import an XML file from the new blog to maintain current backup of content.

This is what I have been trying to do, but not having any luck. The export/import only transfers the blogs, but not the theme, widgets, and other setup info? I would like to accomplish this too. A direct transfer has not been recommended, and I’m not even sure it will transfer the theme and setup info. Any other suggestions?

You are confused. We cannot transfer themes that are coded to run on this WordPress.com multi-user software to WordPress.Org installs because they run on different software. The content in the text widgets can be moved by copying and pasting only. Please read the support documentation >

I am new at this and yes, confused by it. The number one issue is that my WordPress.com blog has more widgets available, particularly the “Subscription” widget that I would really like to have on my site. But, this is one of several that does not show up on the WordPress.org account? Any suggestions?

Widgets cannot transfer because the ones you see here that are not on the self-hosted install were written specifically for the wordpress.COM bloggers.

All the functionality in the widgets here can be found in plugins for .ORG blogs, you just have to do the searching and then download, install and configure them. Many of them have tons more features, which can be a blessing or a curse because they can be much more confusing and involved to set up.

As far as subscriptions, you will have to get something like a feedburner email subscription thing set up and go with that. The subscription thing here cannot be accessed from outside of wordpress.COM. You can export your subscribers from here, but I’ve never been able to find anywhere that allows you to import them into a new system, so what you will have to do is email all your subscribers and ask them to resubscribe at the new blog.

The one thing to keep in mind is that when you go self-hosted, you are no longer in anyway connected to wordpress.COM. You are totally separated from it. An island unto yourself so to speak.

You can search for plugins that you need over at http://wordpress.ORG/extend/plugins/
