Transfering or re-using old site name

  • Unknown's avatar

Many months ago I created a site name under an old account, and then deleted it.

I now have a new account/blog and would like to recreate that old site with the same name; problem is, it’s telling me that the name already exists!

Is there a way that I can ‘free up’ the site name, or at least transfer it from my old account/blog to my new one?

    Thanks,
    John

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Can you share the older blog’s address, so I can have a look?

Unfortunately, if you’re sure the blog was deleted, then the address is gone. You could consider using a domain instead: https://wordpress.com/plans/

*Apologies, please ignore the above post – I replied whilst logged into one I share with my friend! You can remove it if you want to*

Hi, thanks for your reply. The old blog was called chedonjohn.wordpress.com. I created it a few years ago in order to access a forum but can not for the life of me remember the log-in details (the e-mail address I used my even be gone now!)

When I log into johnconstableblog.wordpress.com (my new primary domain) and try to create a new site under the chedonjohn name, it tells me it’s already been claimed. If I search for the old blog I get this message:

“The address chedonjohn.wordpress.com cannot be registered. Sorry, that site is reserved! But you can sign up and choose another one.”

    Hi John,

The message you can see means the URL has been reserved for the user with this username – chedonjohn. You would need to sign into this account to register the blog. If you can remember what password you used then you can try signing in with the username chedonjohn. But if you can’t remember the password I can’t help you, sorry.

    Thanks Rachel.

I do now recall first creating it under the username chedonjohn, but when trying to log in it tells me that the account has been deleted. The only other account I could possibly have registered chedonjohn.wordpress.com under is this one I’m using now, but it’s not the case.

So I’m pretty sure it was under the username chedonjohn. However, I think that I probably then transferred my e-mail address from chedonjohn to johnconstableblog, hence why I can’t log in or the account was deleted, perhaps?

Either way, should that not make the name chedonjohn.wordpress.blog free again, if no such blog exists and the account it was registered under has been deleted?

    Thanks

Ah, that could very well be what happened. When you change that username it becomes unavailable forever. It’s unfortunate but that address is gone now, sorry. You could register a domain instead. This one is available – chedonjohn.com.
