Transfering posts to a new page.

I just created a new page and i want to know how to transfer certain posts to the new page i created. Can anyone help me.

Please paste the exact URL of your blog when asking questions here, or link your nickname to your blog (as explained in the Sticky 8 Things to Know Before Posting). Helps us help you.

Do you mean moving the content of those posts to the page and deleting the posts, or leaving them intact and having the page tab link to them?

  • Unknown's avatar

well….uhhh…*sigh* i thought putting my address in the member link would be enough. Oh well. http://williamca.wordpress.com/

What i want to do is move certain posts over to the new page i just created., words and all.

  • Unknown's avatar

We share that *sigh*… We also wish it was so, but unfortunately putting your address in the member link only serves for detecting wrong visitors and auto-responding to them.

But you didn’t answer my question clearly enough. You mean moving the content of several posts into one single page and deleting the posts or not? What about the comments of the posts?

I too would like to know what good is having other pages if you 1) cannot post directly to them and all posts are only on the home page. 2) If I move them then they don’t show up as posts anylonger.
Yes to you question, as wheather I would delete them, yes, delete on the home page and put under the proper pages, in my case, Basketry, Hand Caning, Rural Living.
If you cannot move them, or post directly to these pages I may as well just get rid of all the pages except for the HOME page and ABOUT page.
    Thanks

A lot of people get confused about the use of a Page. All your posts show up at your blog’s Home Page, or Front Page, or whatever your theme calls it. Don’t be confused by the terminology. Your blog’s Home Page isn’t the kind of “Page” described here: Post vs. Page.

A “Page” isn’t another location for posts, and a Page can’t be used as a junior blog with posts of its own. A Page really just a plain old post, but it’s outside the chronological sequence of the others, and it doesn’t have tags and such. It can also have “child” Pages, but they’re really not a substitute for regular posts. You can’t add posts to a Page any more than you can add posts to an existing post. All you can do is edit them once they’re created.

A Page is generally used for static information, like “About” and other subjects that you want always accessible, which (theme permitting) will be highlighted in tabs that are visible in the blog’s header. If your theme doesn’t display Page titles automatically, you can use the Pages widget for that purpose.

@hbs1991: One small addition to what sensuouscurmudgeon already explained: what you’re thinking of is the job of post categories, not pages.

There is a way to make the page tabs function as links to your (dynamic) category pages, but that doesn’t work in the theme you’re using.

  • Unknown's avatar

@williamca: But it works in the theme you are using – that’s why I needed you to clarify what you’re looking for.

Thanks for all of your comments, I see now that there can be a use for the pages, however what I really have to do is take those “Pages” I have created and make totally separate Blogs for each one,
    Basketry
    Hand Caning
    Rural Living

Then I will need to have a link to all of my blogs so that people know about the three blogs above while they are reading any one of them at any given time, Right?

Not necessarily. panaghiotisadam mentioned “Categories.” That’s all you need, in one blog. Give each post a “basketry” or whatever category. Then use the “Categories” widget. Your readers can click on a “Category” to find each kind of article. All in one blog.

Thanks so much all of you, this is great, being able to ask people and actually get answers to problems. I see now how to use the catagories to to I guess cross reference posts. I think I am starting to see the BIG PICTURE now. Again Thanks so much for taking the time to reply to me. It is greatly appreciated, especially since the whole process for a novice can be quite overwhelming.

  • Unknown's avatar

No problem. I learned a lot here when I was starting.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok what I need to to be able to move the posts from the home page to the new page i have created. Comments and all.

  • Unknown's avatar

@williamca: Make sure you have filed those and only those posts under a particular category, then click that category in your sidebar, copy its URL from the address bar of your browser and create a page as explained here:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/page-tabs-as-external-links/
That’s the best you can do; as sensuouscurmudgeon explained, you cannot avoid having those posts in your main posts page as well. If you want no post mix-up in your front page, then you must have no main posts page, i.e. set a static page as your front.

Are there any themes on WordPress.com that will allow the category list in tabs (like some tabbed pages) one-category-per-tab? Which ones? This may have been answered above, but I didn’t get it. I know there are some for externally hosted pages, but I didn’t find any here, and I would really like to do what panaghiotisadam asked about.

    Thank you!

@pauldangerkile Panos didn’t ask, he gave the answer to @williamca’s question. The same trick making a Page tab linking to an external site also works for linking to Categories, but the link in the Title of the Page would look something like <a href="/category/insertexactnameofyourcategory/">TITLE_HERE</a>

@hivpositivelife-please make a new topic rather than divert an existing topic. What you are looking for is domain mapping to a subdomain (not a subfolder) of your existing site. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/ You still cannot run ads on your wordpress.com blog even if you redirect it. (Just pointing that out now).

Thanks justjennifer and i am not looking to run adds on the blog

@justjennifer I should have realized that. Thank you very much!
