Transfering to wordpress.org
-
I would like to transfer my blog from wordpress.com to wordpress.org in the next week I plan to use Bluehost as my web hosting service. I’m concerned about losing all my content. Is there an easy or simple way to do this? Can I set up my wordpress.org site privately while my wordpress.com site is still running? Please help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can use this guide put up by the WordPress.com team to move from WordPress.com to a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org): https://move.wordpress.com/
As for keeping your self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site private, I am not sure how that can be done. I am curious why that would be necessary though. The transfer process can be quick with the guide made by WordPress.com and you can be live again on a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site as soon as possible.
Please explain specific reasons why you might want to keep your self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site private for a while. I can help further with a clarity.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help! It’s not that I want to keep it private so much as I want the transition to be smooth for readers and don’t want to interrupt traffic to my site. I just wanted time to set it up or choose a theme without it creating errors for readers…

Hi there,
This will depend on whether your new host offers you a staging domain. If they do, you can keep your domain pointed to your WordPress.com site, and then only point the domain to Bluehost once everything is ready.
Else, if they don’t offer a staging domain, you’ll need to point your domain to them to install WordPress there, meaning your WordPress.com site will go back to using the free address.
It’s covered in the link @strikebuys gave you above, but also note that to move your WordPress.com followers over to the Bluehost site, you’ll need to install the Jetpack plugin and connect it to your WordPress.com account. You can move your followers yourself, but we can also move over your stats for you if you want.

If Bluehost doesn’t offer staging domains, another option is to create a subdomain on your domain and point that to Bluehost while setting things up, and then changing that to your main domain when you’re ready.
Please contact Bluehost support for their instructions on how to do that. We can help you with adding the DNS records to create a subdomain on this side, but you’ll need either an IP address or a URL from Bluehost for us to add on this end to create the subdomain.
