Transferred to self-hosting

  • Unknown's avatar

I started my blog on urbanbreakout.wordpress.com. I was slowly getting more traffic and so i decided to transfer to private hosting. I followed the instructions and exported the blog. Everything seems to be transferred over, except the theme.. I even connected my blog through WordPress connect plug-in..

However, the wordpress.com blog never updates any posts. I’m nervous about losing followers because one person asked me why they don’t get any notifications. I wonder if my followers are getting notifications of my posts and whether or not my wordpress.com site is supposed to update when i update my blog via wordpress.org, if its connected?

I’m confused and also new to this. It’s very frustrating and i don’t understand.
    Please help

    Hi Mari!

Regarding the theme, that will not transfer over via the Jetpack plugin or through exporting/importing your content. If you would like to install the Origin theme on your self-hosted blog, you can do so by downloading it from the right sidebar here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/origin/

Once you download the theme, just upload it to your self-hosted blog.

Regarding the updates, your WordPress.com blog will not be automatically updated when you publish to your self-hosted blog. The two blogs are distinctly different. The Jetpack plugin simply connects your self-hosted blog to your WordPress.com account (not to a blog). Does that make sense?

All of your subscribers have been transferred to your self-hosted blog, urbanbreakout.org, and can be seen here:

    http://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog=60835083&blog_subscribers&unit=1

However, all of your subscribers are through the WordPress.com reader, not through email, which may explain why they are not receiving updates as usual. This is explained in Step #3 here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/

    The best solution forward:

    1. Post another blog post to your WordPress.com blog letting them know that you have officially moved and all new posts can be found on your self-hosted blog.

    2. Ask everyone in that post to sign-up for email notifications from your self-hosted blog using either the Subscription widget or setting up your own mailing list through a mailing list software like Mailchimp.

Does that make sense? Please let me know if you have any additional questions!
