Transferring a blog

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I’m asking this question for my client. She wants to downgrade her website that is currently with a web hosting company to WordPress.com free site. At a later point, once she is convinced that WordPress.com works for her, she will upgrade to a basic plan.

I have an export of her current blog and we are ready to go. My questions are as follows:

    1) Show me the url please for where to get started.
    2) I understand that her new (FREE) site will contain .wordpress.com in the url. If she does NOT want to lose her current URL structure though, (e.g. https://www.website.com/blog/03/27/a-blog-post.html) should she go ahead and start with a basic plan and transfer her domain to you?

    3) Is there a way to test prior to making the site live?

    4) Where else can I get information that will ensure that all her URLS continue to exist (for SEO purposes)? This will be the most important factor to her.

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi casadresden,

Show me the url please for where to get started.

A WordPress.com site can be created with this link:

    https://wordpress.com/start

    2) I understand that her new (FREE) site will contain .wordpress.com in the url. If she does NOT want to lose her current URL structure though,

On WordPress.com, we provide the option to change the slugs of posts and pages. But it’s worth noting there isn’t an option to customise the permalink structure without the Business plan (with the use of custom plugins).

should she go ahead and start with a basic plan and transfer her domain to you?

She can start by creating a free site, adding content, choosing a theme etc. Then when she is ready to make the switch, the existing domain can be mapped or transferred to WordPress.com.

If she needs to upgrade in order to access features like additional storage space and premium themes but isn’t ready to connect a domain, the domain credit can be used later on.

    3) Is there a way to test prior to making the site live?

The new site can be marked private until you/she is happy with everything:

    4) Where else can I get information that will ensure that all her URLS continue to exist (for SEO purposes)? This will be the most important factor to her.

In addition to the permalink customisation I mentioned above, you may also want to have a look for a 301 redirects plugin. Keeping “.html” at the end of URLs won’t be possible on WordPress.com, so redirects could be useful for those scenarios.

We also have a few general tips for boosting SEO, which may be useful:

Come back to me if you have any questions.
