Transferring a blog on a registered domain back to wordpress.com

I’ve seen posts about how to transfer an existing blog with a wordpress.com URL to a registered domain. How about the other way around? If I wish not to renew my domain (e.g. http://www.butter.com) and instead, transfer my existing wordpress blog on http://www.butter.com to butter.wordpress.com, how can I go about doing that? I would appreciate any insights. Thanks.

Pretty simple really if you don’t plan on renewing the domain. Just do the following steps:

    1) Go to the dashboard on your current blog and go to Settings => Export
    2) Export the content and all the authors and save the file on your local computer
    3) Create your wp.com blog if you haven’t already
    4) On that new wp.com blog, go to your dashboard and the Settings => Import
    5) Import the file that you previously downloaded from your current blog.

Confirm the entries are all there and you might need to go through it and make sure all the photos and uploads made it across. Then I would simply put up a simple index.html on your current host until it expires that the new domain is butter.wordpress.com or whatever you have. There are loads of examples of doing this in the http://wordpress.org/support/ forums and beyond the scope of these forums.

Keep in mind, you don’t have to lose your domain. You can renew it (not your current host, just domain) and point it over to the wordpress.com servers through domain mapping. That way you don’t lose your search engine, your traffic or your goodwill. Just a thought.
