transferring a blog to a different user

I have been using one blog on WP.com to develop my content and test it before releasing it to my users. I created another WP.com account for the “real” blog I wish to deploy. At some point soon, I would like to “flip the switch” and move the entire site to the “real” one, which has domain mapping enabled from the “real” URL.

I tried exporting the blog from the development site and importing it in the “real” site, but this does not bring all the widgets and other site configurations and customizations along with it, only the posts and pages, etc.

It seems that the option to transfer a blog entirely to another user (http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/) is what I need. But then I lose my development version, which I can live with. Before I do this, I just wanted to confirm that everything goes over to my “real” site, and that I won’t have to redo all of the customization I did.

In hindsight, should I have just made a second blog on my original account to be able to manage this sort of development/release separation? What strategies do people use for this workflow?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Let me see if I have this:

you have Blog A with domain mapping. You have totally pimped out blog B, but now want to have all the stuff you have on Blog B on Blog A, along with the domain mapping.

I can’t see any reason to transfer either blog to anyone; that won’t get you what you want.

There is no way to move “everything” over. Exports take contents and comments; you will have to copy/paste the widgets and redo all the customizations.

Alternately, you could ask staff if you could just pay $10 and buy the domain mapping upgrade for Blog B, stop using the domain on Blog A and use it on Blog B.

Have you checked for your widgets in the inactive widgets pane?

What other site configurations and customizations did you have? CSS?

What do you mean by, “But then I lose my development version,…” Your test blog should still be there after an export.

In hindsight, should I have just made a second blog on my original account to be able to manage this sort of development/release separation? What strategies do people use for this workflow?

I have several test blogs on my (only) account. I think the only thing different for you, having two accounts would be that you are not just moving your blog: you are transferring it from one account to another:

    @raincoaster,
Are you sure about the widgets?

Exports take contents and comments; you will have to copy/paste the widgets and redo all the customizations.

I may be remembering incorrectly, but I believe my text widgets anyway transferred to my test blogs. I had a text widget to add a background and header to my theme and I don’t recall having to redo it.

    But, my memory is good—
    and short…

I’ve transferred a blog, and none of the widgets came over. Maybe staff has changed something, but with all the widget weirdness around, I wouldn’t bet on it.

1tess: Yes, I checked the inactive widgets; they aren’t there. So the docs are right! Simply exporting and importing does not clone the site.

And yes, it’s not just the widgets, it is all sorts of other customizations like header, background, footers, and (soon) CSS.

So that’s why I was asking if the Transfer option was more comprehensive.

raincoaster, the scenario you describe is not quite what I have, but close. Blog A, without domain mapping, is the good one right now. Blog B is empty, but has the external domain I want mapped to it.

What I could do is transfer the domain mapping to Blog A instead of Blog B, but then I have to wait 60 days! So I’m trying to figure out if I can easily move Blog A to Blog B instead.

I couldn’t fathom from the docs exactly what happens with the “transfer blog to another user or account” process.

You should be able to remap a Domain at any time.

The “Transfer” is if you want to have the Domain transferred to a different registrar. The 60 day thing is some sort of an internet thing to I think reduce fraud.

Transferring to a different registrar is different than where the Domain points to or is mapped to.

Think registrar as the state where your car is licensed & registered and Domain as your street address where you park your car.

Ah, thanks for the reminder, auxclass. I knew that, now that you mention it, just wasn’t reading carefully.

So I could just move my external domain to Blog A to solve my immediate problem, but I’d rather have it on Blog B for organizational reasons.

Therefore, I am still curious for any insights people might have about the “transfer” process.
