transferring a domain

is it possible to transfer a domain to wordpress management (i find it a waste of money to pay someone else $25 a year and then wordpress $100 a year on top if I can save the $25)

  • Unknown's avatar

my domain expires in a couple days… should i be considering hosting my blog myself or just sucking it up and paying the $100 a year to wordpress and the $25 a year to the domain host?

What is the URL of this domain you refer to please?

Forwarding is not supported here and it will fail. In fact it is not working now.

    re: mapping an existing domain
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made, it and the domain mapping purchase here, each and every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium upgrade bundle.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.

    See https://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/

Your billing history will be at Dashboard > Store > Billing History
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/billing-history/

Your only options for payment are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/payment/

It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

and that is the part that i dont understand… they will take on being the registrar for a new domain and include that cost in the $25 domain fee or the $100 Premium bundle fee but they will not allow me to transfer a domain which means, because I already have a domain, that I have to continue paying my current registrar $25 a year even if I decide to pay the $100 per year for the Premium bundle.

you should be able to do domain mapping for $13.-/ year if that is all you need (plus your domain registration)

$25.-/yr for registration sounds high unless there are a lot of perks like private registration – you might want to look at other registrars – I have some friends that use Name Cheap and it is quite a bit less they tell me than $25

  • Unknown's avatar

dmain registration everywhere is close to $20 but i like the idea of paying wordpress $25 to be the registrar or $100 for premium including the domain…

but paying even $20 to the registrar and then another $13 to map it seems dumb… punishment for owning my own domain already.

i know… i am cheap… but i still have 6 kids at home and need to be a good example… and being smart with other people’s money is part of my job so i bring it home a lot.

Your personal circumstances and how many children you chose to produce are not relevant.

WordPress.COM is not a domain name registrar. The domain name registrar they use is Wild West domains and in fact, wordpress.comdoes not accept domain name transfers. They provide a domain mapping upgrade for $13 US per year, and you can either take it or leave it http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Best wishes with making a decision that suits you.

P.S. Also, note that WordPress.COM blogs do not have permanent IP addresses. IP addresses here can and do can change over time and your domain will stop working if you rely on them. For more information about domain mapping and IP addresses please read https://en.support.wordpress.com/ip-addresses/

    lol… no need to bite.

and they are a registrar if they register a domain for me… just because they outsource it dont try that line of shit with me because this is what I do for a living. the fact that they don’t alow transfers is stupid, but it is a business decision. It was a simple response that did not require you to get so irritated. You said no and I was happy with that.

Even though I am canadian, I do not apologize for explaining my circumstances. They may not be relevant to you but there are absolutely relevant to the question.
