Transferring a domain in use to a new WordPress host
-
Very inexperienced with this but as part of a charity Board of Trustees I seem to be the only one with A LITTLE PC KNOWLEDGE – DEFINITELY ONLY AS A SILVER SURFER (I AM 70) END USER ONLY I have a little knowledge of web-building from a night school course in 2003 with Dream Weaver but thats my lot! I have ‘bought the book’ on WordPress web-building which is useful but I am struggling with the need to input the domain name at the early stage as the site is in use for all previous Minutes and other necessary records which the Charity supporting us insists is continually available. Until I can work through the new web building (no marketing needed – it is purely a community information resource) I would like to continue in the background with the building. The new host is required as the previous Board of Trustees have all been replaced; the software is well out of date and Apple was their hardware/software whereas I have only Windows10. Is it at all possible to :-
a) use the old domain linked to WordPress and
b) build the new site in my own slomo fashion without downtime of the existing site?
c) with ref to the Querys below… what is an EPP code, please?WP.com: Unknown
Jetpack: Unknown
Correct account: UnknownThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @fastferret,
I’m glad to see you here with us and eager to learn WordPress.
Is it at all possible to :-
a) use the old domain linked to WordPress andTo start, can you please share the domain name that you’re looking to use, and is the site hosted on WordPress.com or elsewhere?
b) build the new site in my own slomo fashion without downtime of the existing site?
Yes, if you’re creating a new site on WordPress.com, you can build it at your leisure and launch the site whenever you are ready.
And with a plan upgrade, you can transfer your domain to WordPress.com. It’s worth noting that a new annual plan purchase includes a one-year free domain registration. You can use this to transfer your domain to WordPress.com, extending its expiry by a year.
If you’re interested in that, you can review plan pricing and features here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
c) with ref to the Querys below… what is an EPP code, please?
An EPP is an authorization code that is provided by your domain registrar. With your domain unlocked and the EPP code in hand, you can then transfer your domain to WordPress.com.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I have yesterday subscribed to WordPress for a Premium account – we are only a very small club of about 150 members so don’t see the expense of anything grander. I have also decided to keep the domain name where it sits currently as several people have let me know they believe that domain and host are best kept separate to help technical issues. I would like to know how to point the host to the domain but have sent an enquiry email to the previous administrator to check the domain details are completely correct. I will get back to you probably with queries on how to complete that step when the domain is absolutely confirmed as I am receiving contradictions on that one currently…. then I will happily share it, even if I need to obtain the EPP code first!
I have picked up an email from your company with a “First steps guide” to building a simple site…. thats where I shall start tonight, I think…..
Thank you again for your informative help

Hi there,
I would like to know how to point the host to the domain but have sent an enquiry email to the previous administrator to check the domain details are completely correct
In order to use your domain hosted elsewhere with your WordPress.com site, you’ll need to change the domain nameservers at your domain host, and point them over to WordPress.com. Our nameservers are:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMYou already purchased the Premium Plan which includes the connection subscription you need to connect the domain to the WordPress.com site. You can take your time building the site over here, but once you are ready to point the domain over, you can follow the instructions on our support page here:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/#steps-to-connect-a-domain
then I will happily share it, even if I need to obtain the EPP code first!
The EPP code is only needed if you decide to transfer the domain over to us at WordPress.com. If you decide to keep the domain at the current host as you mentioned, you won’t have to worry about the EPP code.
Of course, if you have any questions, please let us know – we’d be happy to assist.
Thanks!
