transferring a domain or pointing, plus guided transfer time

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I have a few questions. I am interested in switch to self hosted wordpress site. My questions are:

1- For a guided transfer, it mentions that you point the domain to the new host, but then recommend transferring it. I need to transfer it to buy a package form a new host. It mentions a 5 day waiting period. During those 5 days, will my readers still be directed to my current wordpress blog (I bought the domain from you)?

2- If I buy a guided transfer, will my current free theme still be available? Will my site look the same but be self hosted?

3- I want to buy genius framework, would I let the engineer do the guided transfer, install jetpack, then install the genus framework?

    Thank you

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

During those 5 days, will my readers still be directed to my current wordpress blog (I bought the domain from you)?

No, it typically means that the transfer itself will take up to 5 days time, but as long as the domain settings (that point traffic to your site’s files) does not change, there should be no interruption.

However, to use the Guided Transfer service, you will need to pick a host from this list of recommended providers: http://get.wp.com/hosting/

2- If I buy a guided transfer, will my current free theme still be available? Will my site look the same but be self hosted?

    Yes. :)

3- I want to buy genius framework, would I let the engineer do the guided transfer, install jetpack, then install the genus framework?

I think you mean the Genesis Framework, and no, that would not be something Guided Transfer could do for you. They would essentially take the site you have here, and migrate it to a self hosted WordPress instance, but looking and functioning much like it does here.

Anything you add after that would be up to you, and as the Genesis Framework includes support for their themes, you would be able to get help on that end when it is time to add it to your self-hosted WordPress site.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you. Also, in your help section in mentions that the original wordpress site will still be available. I’m confused, so once I transfer my .com domain to a new register, will any new material I share there be updated on my old wordpress.com site? Or just until the transfer was done? Hope that makes sense. ;/ What would be the point of having my old .wordpress.com site?

Also, if I buy the guided transfer will they do all the domain moving? So all I have to do is pay, than 5 days later I’ll be able to log in and blog? Sorry, this is just confusing. Can I blog during those 5 days?

Once the guided transfer is completed, where would I log in? WordPress.org instead of here? Thanks for your help. :)

What is my first step, second step and so on if using the guided transfer to initiate a transfer to self hosted?

Finally, to purchase hosting elsewhere, they are asking me for an EPP code. How do I get that? Then do I buy the guided transfer and they do it all? Sorry so many questions. :)

  • Thank you. Also, in your help section in mentions that the original wordpress site will still be available.

I think this is more to say that we are not deleting anything (which soe users worry abut I suppose) though you can always delete your site here on WordPress.com after the move is complete.

I’m confused, so once I transfer my .com domain to a new register, will any new material I share there be updated on my old wordpress.com site?

It would live on at it’s default address of crayonboxchronicles.wordpress.com and would be a separate site to do with as you please.

Also, if I buy the guided transfer will they do all the domain moving?

I am asking for some clarification on that, and I will update you when I know more.

    Thanks for your patience. :)

  • Following up, updating your domain here (to work with your self-hosted WordPress site) is included in Guided Transfer, but transferring the domain itself to the new host is not included as a part of that process.

In any event, it’s best to wait until after you transfer your site to then move your domain. I can help you with that transfer when you are done, so not to worry there.

Finally, to purchase hosting elsewhere, they are asking me for an EPP code. How do I get that?

An EPP code is required for a domain transfer, but not for hosting. You should be able to purchase a hosting plan from any of the recommended hosts found here, and then transfer the domain at a later date.

Compatible Hosts for WordPress.com Guided Transfer

Also, you can purchase hosting before you get Guided Transfer, or add it later during the transfer process. The order is not so important.

What is my first step, second step and so on if using the guided transfer to initiate a transfer to self hosted?

When you purchase Guided Transfer, the signup will walk you through the process, and you will be able to contact the team (once it’s purchased) if you have any other questions
