Wordpress.com – Price Domain Transfer, Renewal
A company I work for is interested in creating a WordPress.com Site. They are interested in transferring 2 domains (.ca + .com).
    a. Would the cost per year to renew: .ca ($20) + .com ($24) be $44 / year?
    b. Are there additional costs associated with these domain names?
    c. Are there other things to look out for when transferring a domain?
    d. Can you register a site used for business under a ‘personal’ plan option? It is a very basic website.

    Security WordPress.com
Is there extra security to protect a business site against Malware with WordPress that we should be using?
    a. The website will be informational-only
    b. There are no registrations or transactions happening on the website

    Thanks!

    Hi cc7211,

They are interested in transferring 2 domains (.ca + .com).

We are currently unable to accept incoming transfers for .ca domains (only these extensions). But the good news is, they can be mapped to cc11196346439.wordpress.com:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    b. Are there additional costs associated with these domain names?

Custom domains are a feature of paid plans so I recommend looking at the pricing for those — you can map multiple domain to the same site (with the plan) at no additional cost.

    c. Are there other things to look out for when transferring a domain?

This information may be useful if you are thinking about transferring a .com domain to WordPress.com:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

My main recommendation would be to carefully read through those steps before initiating a transfer — just to make sure you complete everything needed for a smooth transfer :)

    d. Can you register a site used for business under a ‘personal’ plan option? It is a very basic website.

Sure! Plans are named around features we think are useful for certain types of sites. If you are a business but don’t need all of the Business plan features, there’s no reason you can’t use the Personal plan.

Is there extra security to protect a business site against Malware with WordPress that we should be using?

We have some information about security on WordPress.com:

Keep Your Site Safe and Secure

While it’s something we take care of on a server level, there are things you can do to help increase the security of your account (see the How You Can Protect Your Site and Your Data section).

I hope this helps but come back to me if there is anything else you would like to know.

    THANK-YOU Gemma!

If we map one “.com” + one “.ca” domain to a WordPress.com site…

    a. How do we renew the domain?

i.e. If we cancel our agreement with the communications firm managing our current website, can the mapped domain be managed by WordPress.com?

    Thanks,

    Cathy

  • Hi Cathy –

If we map one “.com” + one “.ca” domain to a WordPress.com site…

    > a. How do we renew the domain?

The domain is going be registered at the current registrar, and mapped to WordPress.com. So, you’ll still renew the domain registration with them each year. Both the mapping + registration need renewed each year.

The transfer option would actually transfer your domain registration to us, then you would renew the domain through us each year.

    Hi All,

Is this the correct quote for a WordPress.com website cost for my employer (not-for-profit).

Mapping “.ca” + “.com” domains to a WordPress.com site.

    QUESTION
How do the .ca + .com domains get registered yearly and what is the cost? Currently we have a communications firm that processes this information. We would like to have WordPress.com do the registration if possible.

    Cost – Year 1
120 Premium Plan $10 / month billed yearly
    20 Domain mapping “.ca”
    24 Domain mapping “.com”

    – 24 Credit for one Domain transfer when join WordPress (one time discount)
    ____
    $140 Cost to launch WordPress.com

Cost – Subsequent Years (Cost per year)
120 Premium Plan $10 / month billed yearly
    20 Domain Renewal .ca “www.crosscountryns.ca”
    24 Domain Renewal .com “www.crosscountry.com”
    _____
    $164

    Thanks,

    Cathy

  • Hi Cathy,

Domain mapping is included for free in all of our plans and therefore there’s no cost for the first year or for any subsequent years.

Other than that your calculations are correct.

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

    Hi There,

How does the Domain Registration occur each year?

Do I advise the communications firm who is taking care of the domain registration to cease this function, and WordPress.com will do this yearly registration?

    Thanks,

    Cathy

  • If you transfer the domain to us we’ll take care of its renewal. If you cannot transfer the domain (such as in the case of .ca domains), then you keep the domain with your current registrar and you renew it through them.

By mapping a domain here, you’re simply pointing it here.

    Hi,

    OK.

Is there a way to register a domain independently? Without the use of a communications firm?

    Thanks,

    Cathy

  • Sure thing, Cathy. Even if you don’t transfer it to us, you could transfer it to another provider so long as you have ownership over it.

You can also register new domains through quite a few providers, including us.

    Hi,

The company I’m working for is hoping to set up a WordPress site. There will be a “.ca” domain mapped + “.com” transferred to WordPress.

    The company owns these domains.

Can we have WordPress renew the Domains each year? The company owns the domains.

Currently, a Communications Firm renews the domains.

Is mapping to a WordPress site free for 1 domain for the first year, and beyond the first year?

    Thank,

    Cathy

  • Can we have WordPress renew the Domains each year? The company owns the domains.

For the .com one, yes. We aren’t able to do that yet for .ca domains, though, as that would require a transfer that we don’t support yet. You could transfer it to another provider though.

Mapping is now free for any domain you have registered elsewhere (including the .ca domain.)

    Hi There,

    OK. Thank-you!

Can you verify to ensure I have all the facts straight? Quote for my employer and making sure I understand the process.

We would like to create a WordPress.com website.
    Map “.ca” domain
    Transfer “.com” domain

    Cost – Year 1
120 Premium Plan $10 / month billed yearly
    0 Domain mapping “.ca”
    24 Transfer Domain “.com”
    – 24 Credit for one Domain transfer when join WordPress (one time discount)
    _____
    120 Total cost

    * We will pay a Communications Firm to renew our “.ca” domain yearly.
    * We understand WordPress.com cannot renew this domain as it’s a “.ca”.
    * WordPress will renew our “.com” domain yearly

    Cost – Subsequent Years
120 Premium Plan $10 / month billed yearly
    0 Domain mapping “.ca”
    24 Renewal Domain “.com”
    _____
    144 Total fee

    QUESTIONS
    1. Are there any other fees? i.e. is there Tax on the total cost, we’re based in Canada.

    2. Double checking the communications firm we’re dealing with – we will only have to pay them to renew “.ca” yearly? Current invoice is for $70 – 5 years.

    3. Is it common practice for Communications Firms to charge for domain renewals at 5 year intervals?

    3. IF we map the “.ca” domain to WordPress, is it reasonable to say the Communication Firm will not require payment for other fees, aside from a renewal fee for the “.ca” domain? Trying to understand various fees charged by communications firms.

    Thanks!

    Cathy

  • Hi Cathy,

    Your quote is right!

    1. Are there any other fees? i.e. is there Tax on the total cost, we’re based in Canada.

There are no other additional fees.

    2. Double checking the communications firm we’re dealing with – we will only have to pay them to renew “.ca” yearly? Current invoice is for $70 – 5 years.

Looks like you have registered that domain for 5 years. This means that you’ll need to renew it again after 5 years.

    3. Is it common practice for Communications Firms to charge for domain renewals at 5 year intervals?

Most domain registrars offer multiyear registrations and it beneficial for the customers as they’re getting better discount.

    3. IF we map the “.ca” domain to WordPress, is it reasonable to say the Communication Firm will not require payment for other fees, aside from a renewal fee for the “.ca” domain? Trying to understand various fees charged by communications firms.

For that, you’ll have to ask your communication firm. I general a domain registrar only charges the price of the domain.
