Transferring a domain to wordpress vs mapping a domain
-
I need to know which option will be better if transferring a domain or just mapping it. I currently have a website fully functional and has everyday use through a different provider. We want to bring the hosting and redesigning of the page through wordpress and use the hosting services as well. We want to keep the page up in the other hosting site until we have the template and page ready through wordpress. which way would it be the most efficient way to do this. Furthermore, if it is not possible to design the page and then bring the domain over, can i bring the current templates here and have the modifications done later? the page is emergingchurchtoday.org

Right now, your site uses WordPress.org on a different hosting company. You can absolutely move the site here, and it would require the Business Plan on this host. There’s a guide to the differences with WordPress.com and what you have now here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The great thing about WordPress.com is that the core software is managed for you, and you get support from staff. A description of the Business plan features is noted here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/business-plan/
Something that WordPress.com doesn’t offer is email hosting. So if your current host manages emails for you, that might be a reason to map the domain instead of transferring. You can point the domain mail records to your existing email host or buy G Suite via your account here.
To be able to design over at WordPress.com under the Business Plan, you’ll need to connect a domain. I generally suggest connecting a subdomain like new.yourdomain.com to develop the site. When you’re ready to make the final move, you can contact staff to change the domain name to the main one.
Hopefully that helps to answer questions, but ask any others you have and we can help!
