Transferring a site from a lost developer

I had a website developer (he unfortunately passed away), and he had given me a link to the site he’s building for me. I can look at the website and source code that shows it was being made via a wordpress template. It is almost done, but I can no longer edit or change anything. I’ve paid for the e-commerce template already, and don’t want to pay for it again.

Can I get my own wordpress account, and pickup where he left off? How would that transfer process work?

Or maybe just duplicate/change his account and let me create a new username and pw?

Hi there, I’m sorry to hear about that. Could you please give the link of the website so we can verify if it’s with WordPress.com?

Is there a way to send a private message to a staff member?

The source code shows wp-content and wp-emoji all over, then the title shows “Just another WordPress site”

Sure, no problem. I’ve tagged staff, they are able to redact information but may be able to help more closely, including verifying if a site is with WordPress.com.

To check, enter your site URL here: https://www.whoishostingthis.com/

If it comes up with “Automattic”, then you are at the right place. Alternatively, there’ll be a black WP admin bar on the top of your site when you visit it.

If it does say “Automattic”, please follow the instructions on this official article which explains taking control of a site which a deceased user previously had: https://en.support.wordpress.com/deceased-user/

Hi @jsten4, I’m sending an email to the email address on your account. If you can respond to that with as much detail as possible, we can look into things. At the very least, the site address would help, but any additional information you may have would be great as well.
