Transferring all web content including domain name to wordpress….?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I need to know if wordpress.com offers the following:

My company currently hosts their domain name and file hosting with a site called webcity.com.au, and use site builder: weebly.

Is it possible to transfer: domain name registering, site hosting, and use wordpress as the site builder, to wordpress.com?

If so, please let me know what steps to take.

    Thank you.

    Hey swanvalleycafe!

WordPress.com doesn’t currently support incoming domain transfers. What you’re going to want to do is keep your domain at webcity.com.au and setup Domain Mapping to use it with WordPress.com. It looks like you’ve already started a site at swanvalleycafeblog.wordpress.com which is great! This site already uses WordPress.com hosting and you can build the site via the Dashboard.

In order to map your existing domain to your new WordPress.com site you will need to upgrade your plan to one that includes Custom Domains. Once your plan is upgraded then you can follow the instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

I hope this answered your questions! Let us know if you need any more help.

Hi GSmumbo, thank you so much for your reply :)

Ok, webcity is a nightmare to deal with so we want to move all our hosting – including email addresses/hosting (sorry – for got to add this) to another site. A couple of further queries:

    1) Can WordPress.com host email accounts/addresses etc.?

2). If wordpress doesn’t host email accounts, would it be better to go with an external host for both the emails and site, and just use wordpress as a site builder?

    3) Can I transfer our domain name to a different registrar like say… godaddy?

    Thank you.

    Hi @swanvalleycafe!

I’d be happy to help you start the process.

WordPress.com does offer all of this for you. From domain registering, to site hosting, to using the awesome website builder at WordPress.com, it’s all here.

So what you’ll want to do first is head over here and look at the different plans that are offered so you can pick the one that best suits you: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
(each plan comes with one free custom domain so that you can also transfer your domain over to WordPress.com)

Since you talked about domain hosting, if you want to transfer your domain completely, make sure to follow the instructions for a complete domain transfer from your current web-host. Or, you can read here to see how to map your domain to WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

After you have either mapped the domain or transferred it to us (which sometimes takes up to 7 days) then, you will need to export your current site files into an XML document. After that (and your plan is purchased and your domain is hosted at WordPress.com) you can execute an import through your WordPress.com “My Site” menu.

Please feel free to continue to ask us questions as we are here to help and happy to help you get on the right foot here at WordPress.com!

    Thanks!

    Hi Guys

I’m getting 2 different answers here in regards to WordPress supporting domain name transfers – is it Yes or No?

Also, need assistance re the following:

    1) Can WordPress.com host email accounts/addresses etc.?

2). If wordpress doesn’t host email accounts, would it be better to go with an external host for both the emails and site, and just use wordpress as a site builder?

    3) How do I “export your current site files into an XML document.”. I use Weebly at the moment which very little accessibility.

    Thank you.

    Hi @swanvalleycafe

I apologize, WordPress.com does not offer incoming domain transfers as @gsmumbo said. But your next best bet would definitely be to host your domain name elsewhere reputable, like Godaddy.com. After that, follow the mapping instructions above.

As far as email hosting, WordPress.com does not offer email hosting but it does integrate email Forwarding from Gsuite OR you can explore the hosting options that work well with WordPress.com, here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/

    Sorry for the previous confusion!

    Thanks,

    Hi Gregariousbadger

    Thank you for your reply.

Ok, this is getting a little messy…. I really wanted 1 host for all 3: domain name, site files, and email.

If I can only host the site files with wordpress.com, would you suggest I try this alternative:
Host the domain name, site files and email with an external host, and use wordpress.org as the site builder…? (I understand I can’t use wordpress.com as a site builder unless I use the hosting package that comes with it).

    What do you think?

    Thank you.

    Hi again @swanvalleycafe

That suggestion is a great alternative. If you want to use the site builder at WordPress.org, and host everything else outside of WordPress, that is the place to do it.

See here for the major differences:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
and then follow the links over to WordPress.org to get started.

    Please continue to ask away!

    Thanks,
