transferring an existing .com domain name to wordpress

  • Unknown's avatar

I have read the relevant articles in the help section. see below. My existing site’s TLD is .com the first list states all the different TLD’s that can be transferred, .com is included in this list. But further down the page after that it explains ‘premium’ TLD’s i.e .com etc etc are not transferable and must be mapped. So long story short it’s very misleading. Can someone tell me if I can transfer my .com site over to wordpress or do I have to map it? Thank you in advance to anyone who can shed light on this, cheers, ed

Which TLDs (extensions) can I transfer to WordPress.com?

You can transfer domains with any of the extensions we currently support to your WordPress.com account. If you want to use a domain here that is not on our list of supported extensions, you can map it instead.

Note: Premium domains currently can not be transferred in to WordPress.com. These domains are typically more expensive than a regular domain due to its perceived higher value. These domains can have any top level domain (.com, .org, .services, etc).

    Hello @gloryartglass

.com is not a domain, it’s a top level domain or domain extension. For e.g. example.com is a domain whereas “.com” is a domain extension(top level domain)
So, the term premium domain doesn’t refer to .com; it refers to the whole domain i.e. example.com

Now, what is a premium domain? Any domain name created using a very popular word before the extension, e.g. football.com for which people are likely to be willing to pay much more than the standard price for a .com domain to have it. If you bought your domain at a standard retail price then it’s not premium and you’ll be able to transfer it.

Therefore in the support page, premium domains can have any top level domain implies that it can have any extension and the ones mentioned in the brackets are examples of TLDs and not a list of premium domains.

Also, I would like to point you to a forum thread which will clarify all your doubts: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/com-transfer/

  • Howdy –

Can you tell me which domain you’re looking to use? Chances are, that if you paid a standard amount for the registration you’ll be able to transfer it to us. Premium domains are also much more costly than standard ones.

Thank you both! lizkarkoski & raunaqchawhan very kind of you to get back to me! From what you’ve said it seems I should be able to switch over rather than map it. The address I want to switch is http://www.gloryartglass.com by no means a premium domain going by your explanations. But seeing as I’ve got you on the subject maybe you could confirm it’s ok now you know the actual address. Again thank you !!! :) x

  • Yup! That one should be transferable at a regular price. Premium domains would be like “art.com” — so you’re just fine. Let us know if you need more help!
