Transferring an existing site

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m taking over our club website and will be transferring the domain name. How do I make sure the original site is up until I’m ready to go live with the new WordPress site?

  • Hi there,

Can you please let me know your site’s address so I can point you in the right direction of getting support?

Please note that these forums are for WordPress.com hosted sites only. If your site is using the self-hosted version of WordPress you need to seek help at the WordPress.org forums:

Hi. Thanks for helping me. Our current site is at:
    http://www.eugeneminis.org/Welcome.html
My guess is that it uses the self hosted version of WordPress, so I will go to that forum.
    Thank you,
    Sherrill

  • Hi Sherrill –

eugeneminis.org is not using our service on WordPress.com. You’ll want to visit https://wordpress.org/support/ for help from the WordPress.org community.

The public facing details that I can see on the domain are:

Registrar: BRANDON GRAY INTERNET SERVICES INC.
    Name Server: DNS1.NAMERESOLVERS.COM
    Name Server: DNS2.NAMERESOLVERS.COM
    Name Server: DNS3.NAMERESOLVERS.COM
    Name Server: DNS4.NAMERESOLVERS.COM

    Thanks!
I’ll go to the other support site.

Can I create a test site before transferring over the domain name? Ultimately I plan to use our current domain name and url, but I don’t want to disable it before building a new site using a hosted WordPress account.

  • @sanecessary sure thing. You’d just create a new site with a different name at first.

And when you’re ready to go live with a new site on our servers, changing the domain is as simple as mapping it and setting it as primary:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

If the new site will not be on our servers, there are other factors to consider, but search for “staging WordPress” and you’ll find tips.

Noting as well, if the old site was Jetpack connected and the new site is here or Jetpack connected as well, staff can hep you transfer subscribers and stats so long as you have proper ownership on both sites.

    Good Luck!

Thanks so much. Our site is self hosted and hasn’t been updated in years. No jetpack, nothing fancy. Actually the only things I want to transfer are the domain name and url. I’ll check out your suggestions.

I am making progress in transferring our club website to me. I made a new website on my free site. https://somanyminis.wordpress.com.

Now I would like to transfer the club domain to the new site and retain my “somanyminis” domain name. I would also like to upgrade the club site:
    http://www.eugeneminis.org/Welcome.html to a Personal site.

Should I have the current owner of “eugeneminis” transfer the domain to me first and then have WordPress move the domain to the new site?

  • Hi there,

Now I would like to transfer the club domain to the new site and retain my “somanyminis” domain name

I’m not clear what you’re saying here. The only site in your account is https://somanyminis.wordpress.com/. What is the new site you’re speaking of? If you mean you want a separate new site for the club website, you’ll first need to create a new free WordPress.com address for that site as well. All WordPress.com sites start out with a free address.

I would also like to upgrade the club site:
    http://www.eugeneminis.org/Welcome.html to a Personal site.

You can’t upgrade that site to Personal, as that site is not hosted on WordPress.com. WordPress.com upgrades can only be bought for WordPress.com sites.

First create a new, free WordPress.com site, then upgrade that site, and lastly connect the domain to that site.

Should I have the current owner of “eugeneminis” transfer the domain to me first and then have WordPress move the domain to the new site?

There is no user, eugeneminis, registered on WordPress.com, and that domain is not registered with us.

To transfer a domain to us, the owner of the domain (which it sounds like it’s someone else, correct?) has to unlock the domain and obtain a transfer code from the domain provider where the domain is currently registered. When you submit that code to us, the domain registration is transferred to us, and whoever paid for the transfer on our end becomes the owner of the domain with us.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

Or you can just buy a domain mapping upgrade to connect the domain to your WordPress.com site, while the domain stays registered with the current provider and stays the property of the current owner.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

Either there options will require you to buy a paid plan for the WordPress.com site first.

Thank you! I should be able to make the transfer with this information. In summary:
I need to create a second free account which I will name similar to the domain I’m transferring. I’ll copy the site into it. Then I will delete the at a from SoManyMinis and reserve that for different content.
A friend owns the Domain I plan to use. I want to transfer it to a WordPress site. My friend who currently owns the domain needs to unlock it and give me a transfer code which I give to WordPress. Then the domain is transferred to my new WordPress site. Right?

  • I need to create a second free account

Only if you want to manage the club site using a different username. You can also just create a new free site in your existing sanecessary username account, and use the same account to manage both the club site and your own site. It’s up to you.

Then I will delete the at a from SoManyMinis and reserve that for different content.

I think you may have mistyped something there, but don’t delete somanyminis.wordpress.com if you still want to use it. If you delete that site the address won’t be available again at all in future.

A friend owns the Domain I plan to use…Then the domain is transferred to my new WordPress site. Right?

Correct, provided you’re completely taking over the domain and will be responsible for renewing it in future. Put another way, if you transfer the domain to us, rather than merely map it, you will legally become the owner of the domain, and your friend will cease being the owner. And going forward the domain will be managed with us, and not with the current domain provider.

Okay! Thanks for clarifying. Give me a day or two and we will see how it goes.
