Transferring an existing site to wordpress.com

I set up an account for a free site which is mostly done. I now need to move an existing site (hosted elsewhere)developed using WordPress to be hosted at wordpress.com and I would like to import as much of it as possible and work on it a bit before changing my domain pointer to point to the WordPress site. What are the basic steps I need to take? I am reasonably proficient at web development using WordPress and know how to change the domain pointers so just an outline of the steps should be enough to get me started. My first question is: do I need to set up another account for a paid site or can I add a paid site to my existing free site’s account.
