transferring an expired domain

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I attempted to transfer an expired domain (tropicalcanadian.com) that was registered here and now it seems to be stuck in limbo somewhere. Since it no longer shows up in my domain list, I can’t request the authorization code to move it somewhere else, yet it still shows in a whois search as registered so I can’t just re-buy it.

Can you please help me untangle this mess?

    Thanks!
    Shannon

Hi there, someone has tagged this for Staff attention. Staff will get back to you on whether they are able to recover your expired domain or not and what additional costs are involved.

Here’s what happens when a domain expires: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/

  • Hi there,

According to your account’s logs, your username cancelled the domain on 22 August, so you might have clicked the wrong option while trying to transfer.

I’ve emailed our registrar to try and get the domain back, and I’ll let you know once I hear from them. However, given that it’d been 17 days since your domain expired, you might need to renew it before you’ll be able to transfer, but we can check on that once the domain has been restored.

Thanks Kokkieh & Jennifer. I’ll await further news. :)

  • Hi there,

Good news: Our registrar was able to restore your domain and I’ve restored it to your account.

At this point you should be able to transfer it without renewing, but you’ll have to do it within the next two days. Longer than that, and you will need to renew the domain first before you’ll be able to transfer it.

See here for instructions how to transfer a domain:

Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

Thanks, Kokkieh, but what I see when I click on the domain name is nothing like the steps in ‘Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar.’

I’m not sure if you’ll be able to see the image in this link (https://tropicalcanadian.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/screen-shot-2016-08-30-at-10-19-23-am.png), but the only option for me is “renew now.”

  • In that case the domain is already past the point where it can be transferred. Normally this should be possible up to about 18 days, but the fact that we had to restore the domain from cancellation must have influenced that.

You will need to renew the domain first, then you should be able to transfer it. I checked and if you renew it immediately it will still cost only C$34, but there’s a time limit on this. By tomorrow that domain will go into redemption, at which point our registrar will add a late fee to any renewal.

You can renew the domain from the Purchases page:

So, what you said earlier was completely erroneous then. Good to know. Cheers.

Can wordpress at least release the domain so I can register it elsewhere?

  • I said you should be able to transfer it, but I never guaranteed it. The deadlines regarding when which action is possible with an expired domain are applied automatically and it’s not possible for me to override them, otherwise I would in this case.

It’s not possible to release the domain, no. Domain expiration is a process that takes about 80 days to complete, and during that time our registrar has the right to sell the domain privately at auction, in which case the domain will not become available to use again.

If you want to keep using this domain your best option is to renew it before it enters redemption, and then transfer it once it is renewed. Otherwise you won’t be able to register it until the end of October, and you run a very real risk of losing it completely.
