transferring blog content
-
I have a WordPress blog that a web designer began for me years and years ago. Its old and lame and needs to be brought into this century and it currently lives on a server outside WordPress. I want to start over with my entire site run and hosted through WordPress (I don’t need a ‘traditional’ website anymore) but I don’t know where to begin since I want to keep the content from my old blog. Is it possible to move posts into something new and build new content from there? How do I get that started? It seems that most of the prompts are intended for consumers beginning a blog for the first time. (P.s. -please be slow and gentle with your instructions, I’m very new and not very technical. Thank you!)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Does this help?

I think this does help, timetheif. Thank you! Having read through the instructions I have one concern – my current blog isn’t under a different domain from the one I want to establish and host through WordPress.com. I’ve been doing more reading since posting yesterday and I think that what I use currently is modified through WordPress.org but lives as mydomain.com/blog – I want it to become mydomain.com hosted by WordPress and using one of their themes. I’m thinking that this would only matter if WordPress put me “live” as far as hosting from the get-go but I’m not sure how it works. What do you think? I also read that there is something called a Guided Transfer that you pay for but it sounds like this is to go in the other direction (from WordPress.com to WordPress.org with self hosting). If the instructions really are this easy I don’t see any reason to pay for the guiding service. What do you think? Thanks again for your help and expertise!

Hi @melzwphotog, the different domain won’t be an issue. Even sometotallydifferentdomain.com would be fine, so no worries there.
What I would do:
– Go ahead and export the content, and import it into the new site. Let us know here when you’ve done that; we can help check to make sure your media imported properly.
– Set up the site here the way you want it (add pages / customize your theme / etc)
– Then to finish, map your domain and point it to our servers.
If you need help with any of this, let us know. Also, you will need a plan to map a domain, but do know the plans come with direct support:

Hi all… I exported the content and used the directions you kindly provided to import into my new site but I don’t think it has been successful. The import ran all day yesterday and through the night and is still running now, unfortunately there is no progress bar so I don’t know where we are. I suspect that there’s a problem since I believe I’ve given it ample time and yet I don’t want to click on “stop import” either! How long does this generally take? Is there any way to see progress or identify problems at this stage? Thanks in advance for your help! I will definitely choose a plan once we get to mapping (so that I can receive direct support) but I’m leaning on y’all until I get to that stage…

Hi @melzwphotog, you’re right — that was stuck. Can you remove any unmoderated and spam comments, and then try making your export once more?
If that still doesn’t work, we can try it from our end.
-
That makes sense, @supernovia. Do you know if there’s a way to import excluding all comments, just to ditch the spam? There’s so much of it… I’ll get in there and dig it out if there isn’t but I’m fine losing commentary just to get the content in faster! Thanks!
-
@melzwphotog Try one of those plugins that lets you delete comments in bulk. You can find one at wordpress.org — just make sure you have a backup before running it, just in case.
-
Hi @supernovia, sorry its taking so long to get back with you, it took awhile to manually delete over 60K spam messages BUT I was successful and re-exported the blog. The problem is that it appears my old import is still in the process of importing (we both know its stuck) and I’m not sure how to stop it. There is no button for cancelling the action and I’ve tried right clicking over everything to get an option but no dice. I found a “start over” option but I’m not sure if I should take it. Can you help? Can’t wait to try this new import and see if I can’t rock and roll soon! Thanks so much!
-
Hi @melzwphotog, can you clarify which site you’re importing into? I don’t see any running imports on the site mentioned here.
-
@supernovia, I think you are using the correct one referenced above: worthingtonphotographycom.wordpress.com , this is what I see when I go into Imports in Settings: um, how do you attach an image here? Thank you!!!
-
Hm, thank you for that. I’m seeing something else on my end, but when I log in as you I see it says it’s still importing. We’ll dig a bit and let you know what we find.
By the way, while you can’t upload screenshots to the forums, you can upload one to the site and let us know it’s there; staff can find it. Or you can upload the image then link it here.
-
Thanks for the info, sounds like you have what you need to fish but I’ll keep that in mind going forward. Thanks for your help, @supernovia, I really appreciate it!!!
-
Thanks for hanging in there. I’ll let you know as soon as I have a lead on this. If all else fails, we’ll try importing on your behalf tomorrow.

@melzwphotog still digging on this. Do you want me to go ahead and import tonight if we haven’t resolved it yet? Or do you want me to give it one more day?
-
@melzwphotog we got it. You can import now — it ended up being something stuck just on your account, but it’s fixed now. Use your fresh export file and you should be set.
When it’s done, do double check on your media library, just to be sure everything came in as expected, and let us know if you need more help!
-
@supernovia, just wanted to say thank you for your help! The site imported and the pictures are loaded – I assume that means the media came in fine. Can’t wait to go forward with it, thanks again! Mel
