Transferring blog to dot org and 3rd party host

  There are probably numerous discussions on this, but I’d like to get a detailed how-to.

  I have a WordPress.com blog with a purchased domain. I’d like to have more creative control over it. I heard about downloading WordPress software and hosting on 3rd party sites, but I have no idea where to start, how it works, or what I’m supposed to do. I may try to figure it out on my own, but I worry about losing all my posts and such.
