Transferring Blog URL From old site to new one
-
Hey all,
A few years ago, my student organization created a wordpress.com site with our organization’s name in the URL. For awhile, we did not have access to it, so, when we decided to create a new website, we simply used a less-desirable URL to create and design the new site. Now, we have access to the old site again, and I would like to use the old site’s URL on the new site.
For a little bit, I was going to just export the data from the old site, and then wipe it out, freeing up the URL for the new site. However, I saw in a WordPress.com support article that deleting a site does not free up the site’s URL. What is the best way to get the URL from the old site to the new site? I don’t want to redesign the old site (as we already have a brand-spanking new website up and running, and it would be a pain), but our current site URL is less-than-ideal, and the old site is hogging a good URL. Any ideas? Thanks!
Also, I saw here that WordPress.com said a URL can sometimes be transferred, though they didn’t really provide any explanation how. https://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/
Thanks again!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello!
I think the best way is to export all the content from the new blog and import it from the URL you’ve recovered. And then add a Site Redirect, to redirect the visits from the new URL to the recovered one.
You can check it out at the bottom of this page
Hope it helps!

Hey Raimundoz!
Thank you for the reply! The only problem with that is that I will lose the theme on my current site, which no one on my team has time to recreate. Is there a way to transfer the theme for free?
