transferring content of blog to new blog name
-
Help! I changed my old blog name, happyinhungary.com, to a new name – travelscaping.com – and bought a redirect. But the content from the first blog didn’t transfer over to the new name. My blog is gone! What did I do wrong??
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Alisa,
Currently, I see several different blogs on your account. However, the ones I believe you are referring to are the following:
travelscaping.wordpress.com with the domain happyinhungary.com (has content)
happyinhungary.wordpress.com with the domain travelscaping.com (same content)
The blogs look relatively similar. Are you looking to switch over to one completely? If so, can you let me know which one you would like to use? I can help you to delete the extra to avoid confusion!

Hi!
Yes, I do need help obviously :)
I’ve actually decided to use a different url – travelsandwich.com – instead of travelscaping (to make things more confusing). The blog I’ve been writing for the past 2 yrs is happyinhungary.com and I want rename my blog to travelsandwich.com. I did figure out how to transfer the content from happyinhungary to travelsandwich, but I want to keep the followers of the blog. So should I buy a redirect? What blog names can I get rid of so I don’t lose any content and followers? I’ll no longer be using happyinhungary or travelscaping.
Thank you for your help!

Hi Alisa,
So, here’s what we have so far:
Blog: happyinhungary.wordpress.com
Domain: travelscaping.com
No FollowersBlog: travelsandwich.wordpress.com
Domain: travelsandwich.com
No FollowersBlog: travelscaping.wordpress.com
Domain: happyinhungary.com
Has FollowersThere are quite a few options moving forward. However, here’s the best route in my opinion:
1. I can transfer all of your domains to travelscaping.wordpress.com.
2. I will set the primary domain on the account to travelsandwich.com. So, all domains will automatically redirect to travelsandwich.com. The default WordPress.com URL travelscaping.wordpress.com will only be used for admin purposes. If you would like, I can cancel and remove the extra domains from your account (travelscaping.com and happyinhungary.com), or you can leave them intact and let them expire naturally and be removed from your account.
This way, we won’t need to transfer any of your subscribers (since they’re already subscribed to travelscaping.wordpress.com). They’ll continue to receive updates and blog posts will come from your new domain (travelsandwich.com).
Then, I’ll provide you with instructions on how to delete the extra WordPress.com URLS (travelsandwich.wordpress.com and happyinhungary.wordpress.com) to avoid confusion.
How does that sound? Please let me know if you would like further clarification as well!

This sounds good, though I do have a few questions. People have been going to happyinhungary.com. After all this is done, when they type happyinhungary.com, they will automatically be directed to travel sandwich.com? And all my old content (from happyinhungary.com) will be there? If we remove the happyinhungary.com and the happyinhungary.wordpress.com url’s, what happens when someone tries to go to happyinhungary.com? I want everyone to get used to the new name, travelsandwich.com, just trying to make the transition smooth.
Thanks and sorry for my ignorance on this stuff – trying to learn as I go!

After all this is done, when they type happyinhungary.com, they will automatically be directed to travel sandwich.com?
Yes, since travelsandwich.com will be the primary domain on the site, visitors that enter another address (like happinhungary.com) will be redirected to that domain.
And all my old content (from happyinhungary.com) will be there?
Yes. All of your content is actually stored at travelscaping.wordpress.com. Think of the domain as an outside layer like the body of a car. The engine (content and all) is housed at the default WordPress.com URL (admin only – visitors won’t see it).
If we remove the happyinhungary.com and the happyinhungary.wordpress.com url’s, what happens when someone tries to go to happyinhungary.com?
If we cancel the domain happyinhungary.com, the URLs will eventually stop working. However, by setting the other domain (travelsandwich.com) up as the primary domain, visitors will have time to learn your new URL.
Regarding the default WordPress.com URLs:
– travelsandwich.wordpress.com
– happyinhungary.wordpress.comThose will stop working if they are deleted. However, if you would like, you can purchase a Site Redirect upgrade for each blog and point it to travelsandwich.com. In that case, all of the following URLs would resolve to travelsandwich.com:
– travelsandwich.wordpress.com
– happyinhungary.wordpress.com
– travelscaping.wordpress.com
– travelscaping.com
– happyinhungary.comAny old blog post URLs that you have posted elsewhere (like Facebook) that have a URL like this:
happyinhungary.com/2014/02/17/post-title/
..will redirect to:
travelsandwich.com/2014/02/17/post-title/
That’s as long as you own happinhungary.com. Does that make sense? Once the domain expires (05/15/14), the URLs from happyinhungary.com will stop working.
Does that help to clarify everything? Domains can be a bit confusing, so please let me know if you have any additional questions!

Okay, thanks for all that. So let’s go with what you originally suggested – transfer all domains to travelscaping.wordpress.com, set the primary domain to travelsandwich.com, leave travelscaping.com and happyinhungary.com alone and let them expire naturally, delete travelsandwich.wordpress.com and happyinhungary.wordpress.com.
Whew- that’s a mouthful!
Thank you so much for all your help!

Hi!
I went ahead moved the domains like you asked. They can all be seen here:
https://travelscaping.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades
Can you make sure everything is appearing correctly? If it is, you can delete happyinhungary.wordpress.com and travelsandwich.wordpress.com following the instructions here:
Please follow the instructions carefully as deleting a site is irreversible. I’m happy to answer any questions before you delete them as well just to make sure everything is working correctly!

I do have one more question. I noticed that when I look at my list of all my blogs, my blog under travelscaping.wordpress.com is still labeled Happy in Hungary on this list, even though it is now named Travel Sandwich. Is this going to cause a problem when happyinhungary.com expires?
Sorry to bother you again!
-
It will not cause any problems when happyinhungary.com expires. The “Happy in Hungary” blog name should change however to Travel Sandwich. I believe this may change within the next 24 hours to reflect the new blog name (Travel Sandwich). However, I’ll keep an eye on it. If it doesn’t change, I’ll investigate further!

Hey Alisa,
It looks like this did update itself. Can you confirm that you’re seeing Travel Sandwich on your side as well?
-
I do see Travel Sandwich. Funny thing is, I now see happy in Hungary listed twice, when it wasn’t there yesterday. But it seems like everything is working fine.
-
Hey Alisa,
I want to make sure everything is working correctly. You shouldn’t see Happy in Hungary twice. When I visit your “My Blogs” (WordPress.com -> My Blogs), I do not see Happy in Hungary listed. Can you let me know where you’re seeing that? If you could, please upload a screenshot to your Media Library as described here:
-
Hi Jeremy,
Well that is strange, I saw Happy in Hungary listed twice last night under “My Blogs”, but now it is not listed at all. So I guess it’s gone, as it should be. I’ll let you know if it shows up again and take a screen shot. Thanks for checking up on it!

Sounds great! I’m glad this seems to have resolved itself. Please let me know if you run into any more trouble.
