  Just to clarify, what are you hoping to avoid paying?

  If you are asking if it is possible to use a domain name with a free WordPress.com site, it is not. Using a custom domain requires a paid WordPress.com plan. If you are asking how to avoid paying for the registration renewal that is required when you transfer a domain, this also unavoidable and is required at all registrars that I am aware of.
