transferring domain
-
Hi, just downloaded Lucille Theme and will plan to upload to WordPress, and get started. I own the domain from my original website via wix. How do I go about this most efficiently? My thought is to make the thematics using WordPress and just shift the name from wix? I am locked into wix for another few months.

Hi jwilson01001,
The account you are contacting us from hasn’t created any sites on WordPress.com yet. Can you send a link to the site you are working on?
If you haven’t started working on it yet, are you planning to create and host the site here on WordPress.com? Or do you want to install WordPress.org software on another host?
Once I know for sure, I can point you in the right direction.

My domain, which I have paid for, at the moment is still hosted via wix: JohnWilsonPianist.com
I have bought a separate theme called “Lucille” from Envato, which is supposedly something I can install via WordPress, then adjust and tweak to my needs.
My goal is to take the domain name which I have, move it to WordPress, using the them I have bought third party.
Unfortunately, I am very inexperienced with this, these terms, and general process. Any information you have on how this process should be executed would be much appreciated.

Hi there,
First let me clarify something: WordPress is the name of a piece of software. You use that software to build a site, but you cannot build a site at WordPress or transfer a domain to WordPress, as WordPress is not a hosting or domain provider.
There are two main ways to use WordPress: You can use the original, open source WordPress software, found at WordPress.org, by installing it on your own server, or with a hosting provider like Bluehost. The theme you bought is made for that software.
Or you can use WordPress.com. We’re a managed hosting platform that uses our own version of the WordPress software, but with some restrictions. Among those restrictions is that we only allow third party themes like the one you bought to be used on our Business Plan.
There is no Wix importer for the open source version of WordPress, but we do have one on WordPress.com. So you essentially have two options here:
1) Create a new WordPress.com site and import your Wix site here. Then upgrade that site to our Business Plan which will allow you to install your theme and transfer your domain to us.
2) Set up a hosting account with a provider like Bluehost and install WordPress and your theme there. Create a new WordPress.com site and import your Wix site here. Once the content is imported, export it and then import it on your Bluehost site. Finally, transfer your domain to Bluehost (or whichever host you choose.)
If you want to go with option 2 you don’t need to pay anything to just import the Wix site to WordPress.com.
