Transferring Domain
-
Hi there, I am working to build a new website hosted on WordPress for a business with an existing website. They are hosted on Register.com but they would like a more up-to-date site and access to the many features offered by WordPress. Would it be best to keep their domain hosted by Register.com or switch over to WordPress entirely? Can I build their new site on WordPress.com before making any changes to their current website/domain host?

You’ll be given a free subdomain when you start your site here, you won’t need to add the custom domain until you’re ready.
As for which method to choose, it’s more a personal preference type of thing, really.
Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/
So, basically, are you an “all of your eggs in one basket” type of person, or “not all of your eggs in one basket”? :)
