Transferring domain

I would like to transfer my domain name from my old website through Yellow Pages to WordPress, but I believe they own it. How would I go about getting that transferred over here?

You cannot transfer a URL you do not own. Go back there and determine if you own it or not.

Also ask if there is an exporter so you can export your content out. If you cannot export it out then you cannot import it into a WordPress.com blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

Lastly, note that wordpress.com does not accept domain transfers. Your option is mapping an existing domain.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog. See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Ok, so if someone types in our old domain name (www.domain.com) will it be redirected to our (www.domain.wordpress.com)? The main reason I do not want to just create a new domain is because we have established decent search engine rankings and SEO. It is very important to us that we keep our established SEO/rankings. Also, when some one finds our website through a search engine, will the domain read “www.domain.wordpress.com” or will it read the same as it had before (www.domain.com)

Also, if it is determined that I do not own our domain, is there any way to talk to yellow pages or an account sales rep to change this.

The reason we purchase domain mapping is so when any original link is clicked anywhere on the internet there is a seamless redirection to the URL being domain mapped to. Non one owns the positioning of their content in the SERPs (search engine page results). That positioning is fluid, but normally after domain mapping is in place it will take about 3 months for the search engines like Google to reindex all the content under the new URLs, and when that’s done commonly the blog has the same pagerank and authority it had previously.

Also, if it is determined that I do not own our domain, is there any way to talk to yellow pages or an account sales rep to change this.

All communication with your current host is your responsibility and not anyone else’s. You communicate. You make arrangements. We don’t do any of that for you.

Ok, and in that 3 month span where the search engines reindex the new content of our website, what will happen. Will our ranking and credibility drop during that period? Or will it remain where it was with the previous site until the new content can be examined?

Did you not read the post I LinkedIn to above and the information I provided? We cannot help you with any search engine issues. There are no guarantees that someone else’s content will not outrank your content in the SERPs at any time. There is no means of “owning” pagerank or positioning in the SERPs. The site starts from zero again and within 3 or 4 months will probably be ranked as it was previously. For further information on any search engine indexing issues contact the search engines directly please.

Thank you again, I just have one last question. If I would like to get started on our website at this time, would I be able to map my previous domain name at a later date before the website is complete? Or would the mapping have to be done before site construction begins?

Yes. :) You can register a blog now and implement domain mapping via an upgrade purchase at any time. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

Or would the mapping have to be done before site construction begins?

No. See my answer above please. :)
