Transferring Domain

  Hi.

  I currently have a GoDaddy account for my website but I have updated my website to be on WordPress now. I wanted to transfer the domain, so I wanted to check if the best way to do that would be to buy the domain from GoDaddy and then host the website on WordPress using my Domain name or if I needed to do something else? From my understanding I can host my website through WordPress and do not need to go through GoDaddy to host my website. Please let me know if I’m understanding this correctly.

  I am planning on the following steps:
  1) Buy domain from GoDaddy
  2) Close the GoDaddy account
  3) Update my WordPress account
  4) Put my domain in the Domain option for my website and then WordPress can host my website on my domain that I bought.

  Let me know if I’m missing anything or if there are any additional steps that need to be taken.

  You are almost there.
  Here are some improvements i can suggest to the steps you take:
  (changed are bold)

  1. Buy domain from GoDaddy.
  2. Close the GoDaddy hosting account.
  3. Buy a WordPress.COM plan to be able to map your domain registered via GoDaddy.
  4. Follow this guide to map your domain to your WordPress.COM site:
  https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
  5. Make this mapped domain as your primary domain so that your free wordpress subdomain always redirects to this custom mapped domain. Read this guide to set a primary domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#setting-the-primary-domain

  OR do this:

  1. Buy a WordPress.COM plan, all paid plans include a free domain credit so you do not have to pay extra to register a custom domain.
  2. Register a custom domain. It automatically connects to your wordpress.com site and becomes live.
