Transferring domain
-
Hi, I recently purchased a domain from another provider so not able to transfer it right now but would like to get started on designing it here on WordPress. Can I begin designing the website on WordPress without specifying a domain name and the give it the domain name when it becomes transferrable from the other provider?

You can create a free site to begin with and then upgrade to a paid plan at a later date. The address you choose for the free site wouldn’t be critical if you’d be upgrading and replacing it by mapping/transferring a domain you already own to the WordPress.com site in due course.

Hi there,
You’re right, a new domain is not transferable within 60 days of registration.
You can always start building your WordPress.com site on a free plan now. Once you get started on a free plan, your site will have a site address with the subdomain of WordPress.com. (e.g. example.wordpress.com)
If your site is ready to be launched within 60 days, you can upgrade your site to any paid plan to map the domain to your WordPress.com site in order to use the custom domain.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/Once it reaches 60 days old, you can then initiate the transfer process without additional cost.

Hi, sorry to bring this back up again. I had another question.
I’ve been watching some tutorials for how to use WordPress and I’ve been noticing that people have more features than I have available. Im not sure if this is because they have a paid plan? E.g. someone has more header customisation options than I do.
Thank you.

If you’re talking about using custom image at My Sites > Customize > Header Image screen, it should be theme-specific. Meaning that some themes allow you to upload your own image as the header image.
Here are some of them:

The WordPress.com Premium plan does give the option of CSS customization.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-css/I’ve been watching some tutorials for how to use WordPress
If you were watching those tutorials on YouTube then they are most likely applicable mostly to sites hosted elsewhere using the WordPress.org software. There are differences between .com and .org.
The appropriate WordPress.com tutorials are found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/video-tutorials/ -
My question is, for a theme like like Twotone on WordPress.com, do I get more customisation options if I had a paid plan than I would for a free plan?
I want to be able to design the website and prepare it for when the domain can be transferrable from another host.

I’m not sure about Business Plan but for free, Personal and Premium plans, any customization done on the site including widgets, custom header, CSS, etc are not able to be moved to another host. Only contents (posts, pages, categories and tags) are able to be exported.
Here’s a guide on moving WordPress.com sites to self-hosted WordPress: https://move.wordpress.com/

The Twotone theme is a Premium theme. You could have a WordPress.com free plan and purchase that theme but in my opinion it would make more sense to upgrade to the Premium plan which would give you access to that theme included in the price of the plan as well as the ability to map your custom domain to a WordPress.com site.
