Transferring domain, but it is theft locked and I can’t unlock it

I am trying to transfer my domain away from WordPress, however, I deleted my site from my account before turning off the transfer lock and now the hosting site that I am trying to transfer it to is unable to receive it. How can I fix this to be able to transfer this site?

  • Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re experiencing with your domain transfer, and I completely understand how frustrating this situation must be.

Here’s what happened. When a domain is deleted, it doesn’t immediately become available for registration again. Instead, it goes through a period known as redemption. During this period, the domain is in a sort of limbo where it can’t be transferred or re-registered, which is why your new provider is unable to receive it at the moment.

The good news is, it’s possible to restore your domain from redemption. However, to accomplish this, there is an $80 redemption fee, which is charged by the domain registry, not by WordPress.com. This fee is in addition to the regular domain registration price.

If you agree to the redemption fee, we can email you a payment form to proceed with the recovery of your domain. Once the domain is restored, you will be able to transfer your domain to your new hosting site.

I’m here to help you through this process, so please let me know if you have any other questions or if there’s anything else I can do for you.
