Transferring domain from a 3rd party vendor to our own internal management at our org

How can I set-up an account in preparation for transfer of a domain from a 3rd party manager to our org? There is no ownership question and the vendor is set to do it, however, the WordPress site will not allow us to open an account without the domain name. The domain is currently managed within WordPress. alexandereastman.org

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi @executivedirector39d540847e,

The alexandereastman.org domain is not registered with WordPress.com, however is being used on a site hosted here.

Could you please clarify what you’re looking to do? For example, are you looking to transfer domain or site ownership to a new WordPress.com account?

If yes, you can create a new account by following this link: https://wordpress.com/start/account/user

Please ensure that you are not trying to sign up with an email account already in use.

Otherwise, just let me know what you had in mind. I look forward to hearing from you.

Our outsourced vendor is operating our website on their account. We are looking to transfer the “hosting” duties to our own WP account, which we do not yet have. When I go to the WP site to set-up a business account I can not get past the domain name as it already exists. How can I open an account to migrate the domain from our outsourced vendor to our own control? There is no dispute over the ownership of the domain and the vendor will transfer it to us as soon as we get the WP account set-up.

  • Hi there,

The way our process works, the current site owner/upgrade holder would need to reach out to us to initiate any transfers. We can definitely assist in this, but they need to reach out and kick this off. They can do that at https://wordpress.com/help/contact

One thing that will help is to make sure you have your own separate admin login to alexandereastman.org. Currently I see this site has only one login, so it looks like you may be sharing credentials?

Instead, ask the current site owner to invite this account (@executivedirector39d540847e) to log in to alexandereastman.org as an administator. This will give us an account to transfer ownership “to” in this case.

You can ask the current site owner to invite this account as an “adminstrator” by following these steps: https://wordpress.com/support/user-roles/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
