Transferring Domain from GoDaddy to WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

I already unlocked the domain at GoDaddy and received a transfer authorization code. However, WordPress thinks that the domain is still locked and asks me to unlock it before it can be moved. It has been about 15 hours since I unlocked the domain. What should I do?

  • Hi, can you tell us the domain? We’ll take a look.

Also, you’re welcome to map it in the meantime if you’d like your site here to go live:

    Hello!

The domain I would like to transfer to WordPress from GoDaddy is beniciaoutrigger.org

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

That domain is still shown as locked. Please contact GoDaddy for further assistance.

    Hello!

I spoke with an agent at GoDaddy on the phone who confirmed (after checking the backend) that I had successfully unlocked our domain and removed the various protections to prevent an unauthorized transfer. The agent informed me that there is nothing on GoDaddy’s end to impede the immediate transfer of our domain. I even have the transfer authorization code ready to go.

I am very confused and quite frustrated. I appreciate any assistance you can provide.

  • I’ve checked a few outside whois lookups, as well as a whois lookup from my command prompt. Everything says it’s locked:
    https://www.namecheap.com/domains/whois/result?domain=beniciaoutrigger.org

I’m truly sorry for the frustration; can you present that back to GoDaddy and ask why it says clientTransferProhibited on the status?

    Hello!

Thanks! I’ll check with GoDaddy again. Also, when I entered our domain in namecheap in Transfer Domains (under the “Transfer to Us” tab), it says that beniciaoutrigger.org is unlocked. Here is the link: https://www.namecheap.com/domains/transfer/results/?domain=beniciaoutrigger.org

    So, I don’t know what’s going on.

    Hello!

I spoke with an agent from GoDaddy again. I sent him the link from the previous post which showed that our Domain Status is “clientTransferProhibited.” This GoDaddy agent again confirmed that our domain is unlocked and eligible to be transferred. In fact, he said that I would not have been able to receive a transfer authorization code if the domain was still locked.

Also, in addition to the namecheap search that I did (see my link above) to check for transfer eligibility, I entered our website address in Google Domains to see if it would let me transfer the domain. The response from Google Domains is “beniciaoutrigger.org is unlocked and ready to transfer.” Here is the link: https://domains.google.com/registrar/transfer/in/beniciaoutrigger.org

The agent at GoDaddy said that there is nothing more they can do for me because on their end, the domain is unlocked, a transfer authorization code has been issued, and–as far as GoDaddy is concerned–there are no additional impediments to hinder or prevent the domain transfer.

I have nowhere else to turn. I am at an utter loss as to how to proceed.

  • Thank you for the additional information. It seems like something is doing on as your domain is not the only one with this issue. Our developers are currently investigating this so, hopefully, this will be fixed soon.
In the meantime, please map it instead:

    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/.

You’ll still be able to use it with your WordPress.com site and transfer it once the issue was fixed.

It would also be great if you could confirm that the domain privacy was disabled at GoDaddy’s side:

    Hello!

Thank you for your reply! I confirm that the domain privacy in GoDaddy has been turned off.

    Thanks!

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for that update, and your patience.

In this instance, would you like assistance with mapping the domain?

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    Many thanks in advance.

    Hello!

Since I am in the process of building the website on WordPress, I am not in a major rush to transfer the domain. Thus, I don’t need to map the domain at this time. However, the domain is scheduled to expire on GoDaddy in about 10 days, so in about a week, the situation will become more urgent. Hopefully, the WordPress developers will fix the issue soon, and I can transfer the domain to WordPress.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for your patience on this. Our domains team is having a look.

I’m just guessing if you went deeper into the transfer process with the other providers, you’d hit an error at some point. The status even include the rules from ICANN:

    Domain Status: clientTransferProhibited http://www.icann.org/epp#clientTransferProhibited

This status indicates that it is not possible to transfer the domain name registration, which will help prevent unauthorized transfers resulting from hijacking and/or fraud. If you do want to transfer your domain, you must first contact your registrar and request that they remove this status code.

Did they mention why the status says clientTransferProhibited ? I want to say you can see that status if it’s locked, but I want to say it can apply in other situations too, like if it’s expired or if you’ve updated contact info recently.

    Hello!

I spoke with a third GoDaddy agent who said that the status of “clientTransferProhibited” may have been caused by something getting “stuck” when I removed the domain protection last week.

Thankfully, this agent stated that he had successfully resolved the issue. As proof, he told me to check on WhoIs.com which declared the domain status to be “ok” which is the ICANN EPP Status Code for “no pending operations or prohibitions.”

This GoDaddy agent–like all the others before him–strongly insisted that the domain is unlocked and is not impeded (at least on GoDaddy’s end) from being transferred to WordPress.

Thank you all for your help!

  • Unfortunately, nothing changed on our end but, as I mentioned earlier, our team is already on it.

    We’ll keep you posted.

    Hi there,

The issue has now been resolved by GoDaddy.

You should be able to transfer the domain to WordPress.com without issue now.
