Transferring domain name from active website to new wordpress.com site

My organization owns our website’s current domain. A local company designed the site and is currently hosting it. We would like to switch to wordpress.com and develop a new site through WordPress business. What is the process for switching over?

  • Hi there,

Just to make sure I understand, you have an existing website hosted with another provider, and you want to move that website to WordPress.com instead?

    First, you’ll need a free WordPress.com address, like http://bvghorg.wordpress.com/

You’ll need to export your content from the existing site. If that site is using the WordPress software you can get an export file from Tools ->Export in the dashboard. That file can then be imported to the WordPress.com site, and you can set up a theme, etc here.

To use the current domain with the WordPress.com site you’ll need to change the domain’s name servers to point to WordPress.com – this is done at your domain provider – and then you need a paid plan on the WordPress.com site so you can add the domain mapping upgrade to the site to connect the domain.

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

Domain mapping should only be done after you’ve migrated your content to the WordPress.com site.
