Transferring domain name – is there a 60 day rule that prevents me?
-
HI there
Trying to transfer my domain name to Squarespace as I build the site there instead, but the transfer has been refused. Is that due to the 60 day rule? Any chance I can transfer sooner so I can get the site live? Seems an unreasonable restriction otherwise 😵💫
Thanks

Hi! You certainly can point the domain to the new site for now, then transfer after the lock expires. Here’s how to change the name servers: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/change-name-servers/
And then when it’s time: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/transfer-domain-registration/

thanks for that! I’ve already instructed Squarespace to do the transfer but it was refused… assuming due to the 60 day rule but didn’t specify. Is there any way of getting around the rule though? Seems unfair to keep my biz waiting!!

There is due to ICANn-regulations no way round. “When you register a domain (gTLD) or transfer it to another registrar (usually your web hosting provider), the domain will be locked for 60 days. During this period the domain cannot be transferred. It is part of the transfer policy from ICANN and applies to all registrars.”
As supernovia stated above, your business mustn’t wait as you can point your domain to your new site.

OK so I point to the new host until 60 days expires then transfer right? Thanks so much for your guidance. Appreciated
